| | | Re: Hello i'm new how are you Thankyou to buzfuz8149, oseor- not sure how you pronounce your name, Kshotton45, wildlifesnapper,GME, Deer Stalker & goosey i have a glass of cabernet merlot in hand and raise to you for welcoming me in. Heres to you Cheers! Yes since the meadows need mowing when the grasses reach a certain height to give the native broadleaf flowers chance to shine the cut is on a weekly basis until autumn to let go, it's a big interest for me to try and identify what plants in the mix that i can spot. some i can recognise others i'm not so sure. In the butterfly meadow i can ident plenty of field scabious, salad burnet, yarrow, ribworts, ox eyes and hard heads-lesser knapweed. The woodland hedge bedstraw, wood sage, wood forget me not, garlic mustard wood cranesbills. I'll have to go digital for photos see we can see how it looks though the seasons. All the best peeps and please keep intouch- jez. |

| | | Re: Hello i'm new how are you Hi Jez, i,m new too, had a PC for a while, i love wildlife, watch as many TV programs as i can.
I have a small Veg garden, unfortunately only in tubs, but doing very well, as i,m disabled the and the garden,s all clay and stones its too hard for me to dig it.
Pity apart from birds in the garden we dont have alot else as there are too many cats around i think, we have frogs and toads though from a neighbours pond, which also come into the house if the doors left open, the grandkids think its really funny. |

| | | Re: Hello i'm new how are you Hi Jez, I am a new member who joined a week or so ago. It was a big step for me too, in that I was new to the world of forums and didn't know what to do, or what the etiquette was and plus, like you, I'm quite shy. But, I was so impressed with the WAB site, I just decided to jump right in, besides, everyone has to learn and everyone makes mistakes, so have fun |

| | | Re: Hello i'm new how are you Thanks clovergreen it's a very encouraging reply. I have very quickly have become an active member. but as shy as i am i found myself inolved in some hot topics. I just hope i haven't upset anyone as i been welcomed heartedly and have a few good buddies, hope to make more. i'm sure i'll be told to cool down if i overstep the mark. But it's good practcise to be polite as pos on all occasions even we accidently tread on eggshells i'm sure we don't mean too. Have fun and lets enjoy the virties of WAB as they come. |

| | | Re: Hello i'm new how are you Thanks pete the butterfly meadow is 3m square so definately constitutes as a mini meadow. Most keen gardeners who want to attract butterflies could easily attempt this. The woodland over twice the size and has attractive flowers in the mix- Blue bells, ramsons, foxgloves, Nettle leaved bell flowers this also could be reproduced on a smaller scale mine is in dappled shade. Since this year regular mowing is neccersary to lower the fertility it's a patient game. I prepared the land this time last year tackling brutes like ground elder, burrdocks and fast growing nettles which shows how fertile the ground is. i left it a while and reattacked the ones that got away. Subsoil is the best to achieve fantastic results but as the subsoil was so far under i could remove the topsoil as i desired, so i rotovated the land (a gamble in itself as dormant seed could have chance to thrive). i then sowed the seed in september and will have my final cut then before allowing the broadleaves to flower amongst the native grasses. one flower has escaped on the garden side of the fence though and have left it to flower betony-prunella vulgaris every time i look at it reminds me of the white betony your caught on camera. Hope you spot more! Demicav You'll have to wait for me on the photos. I bought myself a nikon slr before digital went boom-typical that! Now i have a pc it makes sense to trade it in. Don't know a thing about digital cameras would you have a recommendation i want to try and get nice close ups should the butterflies like the little haven i have created for them so something that takes nice close up shots. All the best WABsters-jez! |

Thanks for that about your mini meadow - it does sound really good, and I'm sure your hard work will pay dividends. Keep us all posted on how it develops.
Have you looked at the Wildlife Photography section here on WAB for advice on a digital camera? There's currently a thread there about the best digital SLR for £400 (sorry haven't yet figured out how you link to another thread!).
All the best,
Pete (currently listening to Bob Dylan's 'If you see her, say hello' from his Blood on the Tracks album) |
