| | | Hello I have just stumbled across this site looking for a solution for blanket weed in my pond. I liked the site that much I decided to stay. I like everything wild. I have a greenhouse I grow plants and veg. I love birds, dogs, horses and everything that lives in my pond. I garden for birds and wildlife. I don't use chemicals in the garden. So I will give the barley straw a try as it is natural to see if it controls the blanket weed. |

Just looking through our sites stats they're seem to be quite a few people looking for solutions to blanket weed, I hope you managed to get it sorted.
I was out at Chester Zoo last week and saw a miniature camera in one of their ponds. It was a great bit of kit that showed some brilliant images underwater, makes me wish I'd got a pond in my garden |

Re blanket weed: - At this time of year it is a major problem, I take it that you don’t want to use an ultraviolet filter (This would kill off the weed) barley straw will work for some ponds, the problem is the amount that is required it also will take a long time to start working. By the time it has worked it is never sure that it is the barley straw or just a normal event, that would have taken place anyway. As a wild life person I would have just planted more water plants. You could also give the pool more shade. You don’t say if it is a new pool. Blanket weed is a normal problem as the chemical balance takes time to settle down. Good luck anyway.

My pond is small about 5ft x 3 ft and 2ft deep at one end. It is a wildlife pond so has no filter or pump. We have lots of oxygenating plants. The pond is about a year old. The water is clear apart from the blanket weed. Its not to bad at the moment as I keep pulling it out with a stick. But don't want it to get out of hand. |
