Hello from Staffordshire

Just joined a couple of days ago so I thought I'd say hello. I'm based in Staffordshire and have always loved and been interested in nature and wildlife but am a very long way from being knowledgeable about it. I've recently got into nature photography, which I find is a lot of fun.My main ambition for this year is to see a live Badger in the wild.

Re: Hello from Staffordshire

Hi Paul,

A lady a few miles away recently told me that peanut butter sandwiches will have the Badgers flocking to your doorstep from miles around. Almost every evening during the summer 2 or 3 visit her back garden near Macclesfield forest, and they trek about half a mile just to feed on butties.

Re: Hello from Staffordshire

Hi Paul

A warm welcome to WAB from another midlander.

Up until less than a year ago I had never seen a Badger at all (and I am 61 next week). Then one day I was getting ready to sleep in my car, in a field by Flamborough Head) when a movement caught my eye. It was a Badger and it came right up to my car before disappearing again in the longish grass. Magic moment and one I will never forget.

I hope your magic moment comes soon. They are well worth the wait.

John

Re: Hello from Staffordshire

i would say your best chance of seeing one is between april and august as activity outside the set before dark is high - either young exploring the world or foraging before dark. i saw one late last year at about six in the evening plain a day just wondering around some field margins, so that was very lucky.
but if your going to watch a set follow some basic stalking rules dull plain clothing, quiet as a mouse, very still, down wind of the animals, etc.
someone also told sit above the set, even with a torch it dosnt spook then as much as they expect light form above.

good luck anyway
