How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

I have a small garden with blackbirds and tits nesting but have a pair of pigeons trying to nest in a big cherry tree and frightening off the smaller birds. Anyone have any suggestions on how to move the pigeons on without harming them?

Re: How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

We had a pair of collared doves trying to nest on our satellite dish braket a couple of weeks ago so, being the wildlife friendly and environmentally conscious person I am, I poked the sticks off with a bamboo cane.

In the end they got fed up and went off to nest across the road ... on a neighbour's satellite dish bracket.

Re: How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

What makes you think the woodys frighten off the other birds?
They are bigger birds, but are quite dumb when it comes down to it, and have every right to try and build their nest wherever they can.
Why can't people let birds do "what birds do" and enjoy it, rather than try and intervene all the time?
Other than that, get a license and a gun and shoot them and be done with it!
Sorry you didn't want them harming?.....Bahhhhh I don't know the answer

Now where's that culling grey squirrels thread.......

You could invest in a peregrine falcon

Pigeons don't harm other birds, they have every right to be here.

That's seriously risky advice!! If you destroy the nest you are breaking the law unless you can prove the nest is a risk to human health and safety (which you might be able to argue for a satellite dish but probably not for a tree), serious damage to agriculture or other reasons such as conservation of a rare species etc....

A nest is protected as soon as it is being built right up until chicks have definately permantly left and you are sure the nest won't be re-used.

You could try bird scaring techniques though.... plastic peregrine? flappy plastic things etc? or learn to love them in their big, dopey pigeon way of life... Small birds are only afraid of being landed on by pigeons, pigeons would never attack them - they like seeds and seedlings not other birdies....

Re: How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

We have wood pigeons nesting in a conifer tree at the bottom of our garden. Last year they tried to nest there but the tree is very narrow and they kept falling down the tree. But they still tried then they gave up. It was so funny watching them tumbling down the tree I wondered how they would ever get the eggs to stay up there. I love seeing birds nesting in and around our garden

It sort of depends on how big the garden is and stuff like that. Pigeons can create a lot of mess and bring in disease so you'd need to be very vigilent if you have small children playing in the area, and disinfect on a regular basis.

Two years ago I had a pair of Collar Doves starting to build a nest on top of our security light. Fortunately they gave up after a day or so, but as it was just above the kitchen door I'd have removed it if it looked like they were going to actually build there. The House Martins are fine as the droppings fall onto a roof below the nests and I can clean it up once or twice a year.

Re: How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

I live on the south coast next to the sea, and I am plagued by Sea Gulls and Pigeons... especially Pigeons, who apart from making a terrible mess they choose to nest in any available space there is in and around my garden as well as waking me up at 5 am every morning.

I do not want to harm these birds... apart from netting off my entire garden I do not see a way around this Problem.

Hi Daffodil, and you too Tashi,
Welcome to the forums,
It has been said earlier, Pigeons do not harm other birds, now if you had said Magpies, well! they are predators, and will take eggs and young from a nest,
Accept the pigeons and enjoy the antics they get up to,
Oh!, by the way I have a regular 6 come into my garden, and they feed alongside Blackies, Chaffinches and Dunnocks,
Duncan

Re: How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

Hello all I am a new member here and I was looking for ways to stop a hord of invasive pigeons from over powering my yrad and garden, that is how I found this site. I want you to understand it has nothing to do with hating any animal. I also saw the reply saying they are not a threat to other birds, but i believe that is false information because here in my state they carry disease very often and spread it to the smaller birds. At first I didn't have a problem with a couple birds coming to feast I have about 15 different types of birds eat in my yard. I almost died with blood clots in my lungs so i created this garden to help relax me. But sadly 1 pigeon became 5 and ten 15 now its 20 pigeons in my yard eating and rarely any other birds anymore. I used to sit in my yard and listen to all variattions of wild life but the pigeons saw food and have taken all that away.I hate to pick and choose which birds I help along the way but I am being over ran by them now, they eat more than the smaller birds and make me have to buy food more often then i have for months and months we are in a recession in usa and I am trying to do what I can afford. Most of what I have done was just sweat and elbow grease but now it seems Im in over my heads.I never had this problem with any other bird.Is there really nothing i can do safely to either eliminate the pigeons totally or to drop the numbers down? please help with safe answers I feel bad enough about it as it is. Ty all

Re: How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

Hi and welcome are you in New Jersey, USA or Jersey?
What I am doing in UK because the UK is also in recession is trying to save money by eating off the land. I trap and shoot them and put into various recipes casserole, pie, roast etc. They do carry diseases but this is not usually a problem for humans or other birds unless there is close contact before cooking.
If you keep feeding them on the ground then they will multiply and you will never get rid of them - Pigeons are ground feeders. Have you got seed in containers hanging or above ground. Sorry to hear about your health and hope you make a full recovery.
Best regards

Obviously you cannot scare them off or poison them without affecting your other birds, this means either shooting or not doing anything.

Re: How do I stop pigeons nesting in my garden?

Oo-er...this is an old thread ! Not only that, but couldn't help but notice that the OP Daffodil posted, and judging by her profile, didn't even come back to see the replies.

Same with Tashi, a couple of years later.

And again, with Peace of mind!

All three posted the once and flew the nest, so to speak. So I guess we are talking amongst ourselves, lol. Still, at least I know pigeon pie comes very highly recommended! (And just for the record, noooo - I don't fancy giving it a go )

D.
