Hope you do I have never seen a GCN..in the flesh..Its nice to have common newts though..
Your walk sounded really nice..
Did you scare off the nightingales walking past them like that.

I am going to revamp my pond..well dog proof it. we are going to fence it off with live stock fencing wire so wildlife can come and go and have a safe area away from the nut case dog. I can open up the area, the frogs used to jump from the pond into the undergroth behind the pond but we had to net it to stop the dog jumping in al the time and that stopped the frogs jumping out and also the dragonfly's stopped laying eggs in there...
So that a summer job.

Just been out with a torch looking in the pond..
I saw 4 smooth newts 3 female and 1 male with a crest wafting his tail and lots of tiny toad tadpoles..:D

Hi K

The Nightingales are very territiorial and rearely move even when you are close. Usually too much movement stops them from singing however they soon start again. As dusk approaches the Nightingales seems to join up all the parts of its song in a complete sympthony, the sound gets more intense and you feel very close to the birds.

With the GCN I was surprised at how much larger than the commons they are.

When you talk about fencing I feel I really suffer as the whole of my garden is surrounded by dog proof fencing and other than birds and Rats few creatures can get in. We have Badgers and fox all around the garden and I would like to attract them but the fence and a road meke it impossible.

Hi Roy,
The nightingales sound like a real experience I would love to hear or even see one.

the fence is up and its a lot easier to see the pond now I sat there for ages just looking into the water..
I have a cunning plan to get the newts within camera distance and its working..:D
Though no pics as yet I was just watching.
I put dried bloodworm in the feed the toad poles and found the newts are coming to feed so next fine day I will there with the camera..
I was watching a female newt laying eggs on a marsh marigold leaf today.

Hi Buddy Bears yes i know your all thinking what the hell is Bouncy doing this for joining WABphinians when she wouldn't know what a frog was even if it jumped up and hit her in the face well..... I had two Dragonflies last year and and three small garden wildlife pond now so you never know SOMEDAY MY PRINCE sorry FROG will come?! LOL

HW..Its impossible to get pics of the newts they hid in the weeds too well..

Bouncey welcome and I cant wait for anything you have in your garden you can post them here if you want.

I have just installed my third pond. This is a medium sized one, and is a dedicated wildlife pond. I also have a large fishpond (speaks for itself but it still houses lots of wildlife!) and a tiny, still and shady newt pond, they love it! I took some piccies on my phone the other day, I shall attempt to load them here when I have a mo - just so's you can get a feel for my garden and later on maybe I'll get some decent close up shots of the wildlife ;-)
