I was thinking....

Yes scary I know :-)

I am a member of a few and have been looking around at what things they had planned for the summer, like days out and visits. And I got to thinking that if others here were also members of the same groups, we could arrange to hook - up at one of the trips.

Anyways, I belong to:

Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust
Norfolk Wildlife Trust
RSPB
Hertfordshire Natural History Society (I have just joined)
Hertfordshire Birdclub (I have just joined)

How about you guys, are we members of the same clubs?

i,m a member of th rspb, but i dont go to any meetings of the local group as its on the same evening as a quizz night we like.

I'd come along to an "official" event or two, certainly, but I'd be equally happy meeting you folks at something we organise for ourselves.
At the risk of sounding rude, I tend to think that big groups are the worst of all worlds - too much talking (disturbing the wildlife and stopping anyone hearing anything) and not enough watching the wildlife! I reckon a small group of WABbers would give us all a better chance to chat a bit and see some wildlife too.

I'm a member of the London Wildlife Trust, but when it comes to renewing, I think I'l join the Herts & Middlesex instead, as I always seem to end up at their reserves.

I tend to stay away from organised walks unless I am somehow involved with leading them. They are very useful for people who are starting to get interested in the wildlife around them (and developing peoples interest is important for conservation), but once you start to pick up some knowledge you can often do better on your own - and judging from peoples posts I think that there is enough knowledge among H&M WAB group members!
What sort of wildlife are you all most interested in, and where can you travel to, if we do try and arrange a local meet?

As for the original question;

I can't usually remember all the groups that I belong to (so many are worth supporting)!
Some of the ones that haven't already been reported include Butterfly Conservation, London Natural History Society, Essex Birdwatching Society, East London Birders Forum and Essex Wildlife Trust.

Hi Roy,
Birds, dragonflies, butterflies and flowers are my targets, so I'm pretty flexible.
I actually don't know our 3 counties terribly well (I'm a member of the group because I travel through every day to-and-from work), so would be guided by others. Outside the 3C, I know some Cambridgeshire sites, as that's where I was brought up, and I travel to Suffolk and Kent reasonably often, and increasingly to Norfolk, too.

I have just got all the literature through from The Hertfordshire Natural History Society and was wondering if anyone has brought the book 'Dragonflies & Damselflies Of Hertfordshire'?

It's on special offer @ £9.50 inc postage.
I'm ordering my copy tomorrow as I think it's a good deal.

You've probably already plced your order by now Mungo, if you have you probably won't be dissapointed in the Dragonflies of Herts book (unless you're expecting an ID guide). Like most books of this type it will soon go out of date as distributions change (Small Red-eyed Damselflies are already far more widespread than shown), but at least for the time being it gives a good indication of the species in Herts + their flight periods. There is also a section giving some of the better sites in the county to visit for dragonflies.
