Ouse Washes Update

"The water levels on the Washes are dropping and there is a good spectacle from many of the hides. Still very good numbers of whooper swans around and most are staying on the washes during the day to feed. They can be viewed from Common Wash Hide to Kingfisher hide. Waders are on the far bank but good numbers of godwits, as well as dabbling ducks such as pintail, shoveler, gadwall and wigeon are all visible from Welches Dam and Rickwood hides.

Below are the figures for the whole of the washes from Earith to Welmore (including the WWT section) which was counted on Monday 16 March.

Hi

The bad news for me over the weekend was that a local fishery has lost 5 large Carp to an Otter, these were very valuable fish (over 40lb) I am really concerned about the repercussions. The lake is right next to the River Ouse where there have been Otters for hundreds of years but the Fishing Club have already put headlines across the local newspaper. The fishing club have also published pictures on their web of the dead and half eaten fish. I am unsure of how I can protect the Otters but I may be going into battle I will contact the local wildlife groups and see if a meeting can be arranged with the fishery to offer advice and protection. This is very close to where an abandoned young Otter was found and I suspect there is a mother feeding young.
