| | | Few Nights Break to Pembrokeshire in June - Where To Visit? Hey Everyone
We are off to Pembrokeshire in mid June for a few nights - took advantage of the Travelodge sale and we will be staying in "Pembroke Dock" - the reason for choosing this location is that it is only 45 minutes or so from the edge of the mainland for trips to Skomer Island which is where we hope to be able to visit.
What sort of birds/wildlife can I expect to see on and around Skomer? Obviously I would love to see the Puffins - are there Gannets present on Skomer? What about Seals?
What other locations are around Pembrokeshire - I was reading about "Stackpole National Nature Reserve" - is there much there?
Any other good locations in the surrounding area that would be worth a visit in June?
Many Thanks for your time
Best Wishes, Rob |

I can't give you any concrete advice as I've not been myself.
But Skomer will be good for Gannets, Puffins, Guillemots and Razorbills amongst others during June.
I did look into visiting Stackpole at some point, looks like a good site for various butterflies and dragonflies (particularly Bosherton Lakes) as well as things like Otters and Eels. Also good for certain Bat species, Choughs and other woodland birds.

Beyond Stackpole is St Govean's Head, where out to sea you should see gannets and plenty of Manx shearwaters. There are choughs here too. There are some excellent beaches in Pembrokeshire as well, with Marloes Sands being my favourite. We went last July and had a lovely time.

Along with Puffins (which in June will be seen bringing in food for the pufflings in the burrows) you will also see Razorbills and Guillemots (the chicks of both fledge in June), plus Manx Shearwater and Chough. Fulmars and Kittiwakes are also seen. Short-eared Owls and Peregrines are often seen during the day in June and July. Smaller birds include Wheatear, Skylark and Mipits.
Grey seals, Porpoises and Common Dolphin are regularly seen too. I've got a map showing where the Grey seals are seen during pup season. During June and July the island is smothered in red campion, so defintley a good time to visit. The brochures I have, were printed by the Welsh Wildlife Trust so Im guessing you could possibly order some for yourself. |
