Numbers nailed high on tree

Seen this on a tree in local wood today was a good hight up any one know what No's on this tree are for

It could be part of a tree-trail, we have something similar in my local park.

Intresting but only seen the one tree with these No's markings on them in this wood, will see I can can find out form woodland trust if this is the the case as it is one of there woods

Some of the trees here have dog tags with numbers on I think they are under preservation orders but not sure.
I don't think yours are the same.

I think many people are finding it useful to manage trees on an individual basis, if you want to do that you do need to be able to identify each tree. Then the management of each tree can be tracked. If a local authourity is responsible for 10,000 trees, the identifier "next tree down the road from mrs. Entwhistles" will not do. Just a guess.
