| | | Protecting Cast Iron Bird Baths I've got hold of a cast iron bird bath and realize if left outside it will rust. Someone has told me I can paint it with enamel paint, is that true? Is it not toxic? |

| | | Re: Protecting Cast Iron Bird Baths If it is free from rust and thoroughly clean of any grease etc., then a good coat of Hammerite (Make sure that you use the "Direct to rust metal" type), will give about the best protection.
I wouldn't like to make a definitive comment regarding toxicity of such paint, but, provided that you give it sufficient time to dry properly, and, given that the water would (should) be changed regularly, and that birds will drink from whatever sources are available, I doubt very much whether it would have any adverse effects.
(You could always e-mail the manufacturer for their advice).
