| | | Pan-species listing Just following on from a short diversion we had in the 'My Year List 2011' thread, does anyone else keep a Pan-species list? (see Pan-species Listing for more info)
I keep a list of pretty much everything bar lichen & moulds etc and didn't realise there was an official list for it!
After tallying up just now I'm on 598 species for Britain, although I know I've seen a lot more just never bothered getting them down to species level (especially some insects and fungi that are nigh impossible to separate )

| | | Re: Pan-species listing Been trying to gee myself up to write up what I hace seen. Been struggling to find anywhere that has a decent list with pics of seashore life - anemones etc.
Done my dragonflies, butterflies, birds, mammals, fish, herps, molluscs and crustacea (incomplete) and that comes to 503.
Can't access my full moth list which is around 400+, plus about 300 of fungi and lichens. Then there's the plants too!
Cheers,

| | | Re: Pan-species listing Don't forget all the other insects too!
I realised I missed a couple on mine so I'm actually on 600 exactly.

| | | Re: Pan-species listing I keep records of mammals, herps, birds, moths and butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, some other insects, plants and some fungi. I also have a very short list of lichens.
I couldn't tell you how many species of each that I've seen though, although I probably could work it out given time. I might do just that on one of these dark winters evenings and post the results here.
My list so far would purely be a Scottish one, I've not done any recording or wildlife watching south of the border, and most of my records are in the Highlands, with just one or two forays south of Perth and a few trips to the Islands.
I'm heading south to Teesdale next year though with my local Botany Group, so I'll finally get some English records!
***Note to self, must check passport***

| | | Re: Pan-species listing I started a thread on the same topic last year, but got no replies!
Since then I have been adding stuff through checking old notebooks, photos etc: and of course adding a few through learning more, visiting new places and looking for different groups.
Current total stands at 2322, with Higher Plants being the largest single group of species (over a quarter). The group where my documentation is most deficient is the Seashore: its a long time ago since I did WEA Marine Biology classes & the, then, obligatory week as an undergraduate. I'm also missing about 50 lichen species which I'm gradually chasing up and tagging the appropriate photos. |

| | | Re: Pan-species listing Never done a total list of anything.
Best I can do is 998 native plant species I once recorded flowering in one year. I was in competition with a friend; I don't remember who won. We were trying to see if we could reach a 1,000. If we had included aliens it wouldn't have been too difficult.

| | | Re: Pan-species listing I've seen people on other sites doing pan-listing. All seems rather OCD like + don't really care to try + work mine out. I don't even know my British bird list, though could work it out- I really only do a year list as my RSPB diary allows me to tick off what I've seen with usually a small number of rarities to add on.
Good luck to those who do it, but I've better things to do with my time! |

| | | Re: Pan-species listing Well most of mine just came out of MapMate (about 40% are in groups where I contribute records to county or national recording schemes), or a couple of existing site listings, so it didn't require a huge amount of effort to bung lists in a spreadsheet. I was intrigued enough by Telfer's original blog post to wonder about my own rough total. Since then it's been pretty easy to keep it up-to-date: I'm not falling over new additions all the time. Nor am I running around like mad with the specific idea of adding to it.
Listing may be a symptom of OCD, but I think there are a couple of obvious benefits: - Improving Skills. Years ago I used to keep day lists when birding: the goal of increasing the total number of species in a day led me to learn much more about finding the right habitat, learning calls, acquiring a better idea of behaviour and getting to know a patch. Nowadays, I'm more likely to seek out a single species to fill gaps in my knowledge/experience, although I see fewer Treecreepers these days.
- Record Keeping. If I don't keep a list of what I've seen, particularly when out with lichenologists, and mycologists, a lot of my memories of the day turn into mush anyway. So I've got to have notes, audio memos, lists and photos to learn. I know others manage to internalise stuff from field excursions much more successfully than I do, but bitter experience tells me that if I don't have a record of something new I'm not likely to recognise it again. I do like to return from a field trip and put the new knowledge acquired to work in my local patches.
I don't think 2300+ is particularly impressive: I'm sure there are plenty of WABbers who have seen many more species than this. That being said I'm flabbergasted that Stuart Dunlop's total from his Donegal Hedgerow sites is only 1404. |

| | | Re: Pan-species listing Posh last post pretty much sums up the way i go about it. My records all go to the local records centre, if possible to the relevant national recording schemes. I don't run around chasing that tick, i do however try to record everything i find at a site (rarley Diptera). Which mostly are all within 5 miles of my home...
I've not complied my "life" species list, not all my records are to hand. But its something i've slowly been working on. I also had to start recording into Mapmate a fresh about one and half year ago...just checked, 3968 records of 1158 species.
I will try to get my list together soon and report back.
