| | | Re: how to make a treecreeper nest box? I have posted on this topic before. A friend tried all sorts of designs with no success. However, I used to work at an outdoor cente where we had loads of bird and bat boxes. We regularly had tree creepers nesting in bat boxes! When the young fledge they don't seem to fly straight away - they creep out down the back plate of the bat box (which needs to be roughed) and when disturbed they creep back up the back plate and into the box - worth a try! |

| | | Re: how to make a treecreeper nest box? Im sure there will be some designs if you google it. However as Ladywell says take up is very low. This is usually because they occur in fairly low densities and natural nesting holes are usually in abundance as they require such small gaps, lifted bark etc. If you do make one, make the internal cavity quite small, most guides show a design which is far to big. Also try to hide it as best as you can low down on a tree and try to use natural materials and keep the bark on the wood, they probably have a better take up on Oak, as this tends to be a tree they regularly use to build nests in.
Alternatively look up nest flaps for this species, they can be just as successful as boxes. |

| | | Re: how to make a treecreeper nest box? We have a treecreeper in our garden, seems to like the big willow tree the most, but I can't find it's nest as yet. Such a beautiful bird, I want to encourage more of them if I can. I'll try to get some photos of it's nest and maybe we can experiment with nest box/ bark flap.
The day we moved in and I spent 20mins watching the treecreeper from a few feet away on a balcony, lovely wee thing

| | | Re: how to make a treecreeper nest box? As Dogghound says, their natural nest site is on a tree trunk which has rough peeling bark. have only ever found one natural nest site in 30 years. Might be worth combining both ideas and putting a bat box on a suitable tree? Goo luck! |

liam | For advice on many different nestboxes - including treecreeper - download this BTO pdf: http://www.bto.org/sites/default/fil...es/nestbox.pdf

| | | Re: how to make a treecreeper nest box? Have had limited success with a design that has a open back that is made to fit the curve of the tree its fitted to and with small split like entrance to the side at the bottom this I six have of these in two woods near to me have had two used by tree creepers (both these on oak) a blue tit in another other three not used for nesting as yet the design was based on a treecreeper box that is sold by jacobi jane and rather expensive; MIKE |
