Dear fellow members of the Country Landowners Association,
Three cheers for our president William Worsley for giving the CLA's unequivocal support for the badger cull. In his leader in the CLA magazine, William tells us that
"10 licenses, covering 150 square kilometers each , will be issued per year in a four year sustained program." But be careful. He says
"security issues are of course paramount. Detailed security plans are being drawn up" He is certainly right. Above all, don't let those ghastly bunny-huggers at Wild Around Britain know, or they might use their social network to tell each other where the trial culls are happening, and do something about it.
William, who is pictured with a big grin on his face in the article, says the CLA are
"genuinely relieved and grateful that (Secretary of State for Environment etc.) Mrs Spelman has grasped the nettle and made the right decision. The Government says the latest consultation is about "how to" rather than "whether to" cull. This will be followed by a 10-week trial cull in two badly affected areas and then, once the manner of the cull's delivery has been given the green light by an independent assessment, a roll out of the control policy in other bovine TB hotspots. This is a good start in the fight against this horrendous disease and an issue on which the CLA and NFU and indeed the TFA (Tenant Farmers Association), are as one."
We all know the NFU have been lobbying the government hard behind closed doors to get rid of these fence destroying, field-digging pests, and that they were pushing for
total elimination of badgers over very wide areas to make the culls effective.
Luckily, our beloved president makes no mention of the tens of millions of pounds previous trial culls have cost, or the fact that DEFRA concluded from those trials that culling was not a practical solution. Nor does he mention the negative effect on public opinion towards British Farmers and the "Little Red Tractor" symbol set up by the NFU that the cull might have.
If, like me, you want to write to William at the CLA to tell him how much you support him on this, the address is
William Worsley, President,
Country Land and Business Association Limited,
16 Belgrave Square,
London SW1X 8PQ
Now I do hope I don't get muddled posting this onto the CLA message board.... so easy at my age.
