| | | Muntjac Hi everyone having been a resident on a large Housing estate most of my life (54 years) about a week ago whilst chatting to my inlaws I scoffed at there remarks about seeing a small deer on the estate I had never seen one and muttered to myself it was probably a Fox well to my surprise while walking to town through our estate last night 3-9-2011 in the distance scuttling across a small patch of grass was a small deer probably Muntjac I was amazed and am wondering are they moving into urban areas like the Fox.
Thanks Steve |

| | | Re: Muntjac I heard reports of them in gardens inside the ring road in Huntingdon a few years ago. Their rapid spread across the country demonstrates that they are obviously adaptable, so their encroachment into urban areas shouldn't really be a surprise. |

| | | Re: Muntjac I've been 30+ years in Suffolk. When I came all you ever saw of Muntjac was the white tail disappearing into the bracken.
Nowdays they won't bother to move until you are about 20m away. They are adapting fast. |

People should remember though that though small, they have sharp tusks and about 15 years ago now, a man released a muntjac that was caught in a fence - the deer repaid him by panicking and gouging him in the upper leg.
The man was rushed off to hospital - he had lost so much blood, he was lucky to survive.
I can't remember now if this was in Ipswich town or somewhere else in Suffolk.

| | | Re: Muntjac This is really interesting. We have quite a few muntjacs in the fields and woods around our town, but I've never seen any venturing into housing estates or anything. Make you wonder what they're finding to eat there.

George | They're very partial to rose bushes (as are Roe Deer) + other garden plants. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
