| | | Slugs Mating
During a recent foray in Roudsea we were lucky enough to come across these two slugs mating ..... but I have questions I have failed to find answers to on the internet (found plenty U-Tube clips of all sorts of animals mating - which somehow led on to humans doing the same - I clicked away at this point )
There was plenty -- including a full clip of Leopard Slugs mating with David Attenborough giving the commentary - all fascinating - but nothing regarding the more common or garden species going about it ......
These two in my photo have produced copious amounts of 'goo' between them - I assume it contains sperm? Do they then reingest this - they must do if it has sperm in it otherwise what is the point? If they do 'suck it back in' how do they do this? And if it gets left behind occasionally - is the stuff we've been guessing at as 'Star Jelly'?? I would like to know what happened next but didn't have the time to lie there and watch what I suspect is a long procedure ..........
Anyone know? Anyone studied the mating behaviour of slugs?? Answers on a postcard please!

| | | Re: Slugs Mating I'm going to bounce this up again cos I really would like to know the answer to this - I;ve looked at loads of websites on slugs and no-one actually says what happens in detail. I'm sure someone must know the full mechanics of it - perhaps one of you younger folk doing biology???

| | | Re: Slugs Mating My understanding is that slugs and snails are hermaphroditic. They approach in pairs at the appropriate time of year, when a young slug's fancy lightly turns to lurv. They position themselves head to tail and fire calcium carbonate tipped "ropes" each into the other. They then exude a lot of mucus and "wind in" the "ropes", sliding on the mucus. When they are alongside the male part of each fertilises the female part of the other, thus giving a whole new meaning to "mutual orgasm". The mucus you have observed is probably the slidey stuff, not sperm.
You are a disgusting person. How dare you show interest in the Molluscan Karma Sutra? Yeuch.
