He's telling it how it is. There's a long way to go before salmon stocks return to abundance, particularly on the west coast of Britain. Yes, there have been some encouraging signs on the east coast rivers but spring runs are still low. There has to be a better accommodation between farming interests and wildlife conservation with broader untouched strips between ploughed fields and rivers.
Having said that I suspect the biggest contribution towards returning salmon stocks has been the buying off of various commercial fishing interests such as estuary nets and long-lining operations in the Faroes, and that was done using a fund tapping the pockets of riparian owners and anglers.
