| | | Cheviot foodstuffs Whilst walking in the Cheviots this weekend I noticed, along the paths heading down from the summit to Wooler, a number of low sided trays, with what I'd describe as pellets, a sort of grey in colour, and what I assumed to be foodstuff.
The trays were maybe 14 inch by 8 and surrounded by large rocks, to secure them. At first I thought they were poison, but I considered they were far to conspicuous to be anything untoward.
Can anybody shed any light on this for me?

I wonder if they might be some type of food supplement for Red Grouse, perhaps containing fibre and protein.
I'm sure I read aboout this somewhere.

| | | Re: Cheviot foodstuffs They are grit trays containing granite grit often medicated (coated) for the treatment of Trichostrongylus tenius - an intestinal threadworm. Your description is good for this.
Grit is essential for the digestion of coarse foods like heather shoots and moorland grasses. It is held in the birds gizzard.
The trays or boxes are often marks with a pole to aid location. |

The grouse explanation works as I saw many so I think you're correct there Tracey. This is interesting information about the medication Woodman.
At first I thought it looked not dissimilar to poisons put down for rodents, even the way it was presented, but as I said it seemed to conspicuous for that.

| Yes, this is what I read about but it was a while ago now. I just couldn't remember the finer details of it!
