| | | Re: Possibilty of 100 whales being stranded Yes- this was on the news earlier. They look in a bad way. Pilot whales in large pods have done this sort of thing before.
I hope they don't strand themselves and make it safely back out to sea.

| | | Re: Possibilty of 100 whales being stranded I'm going on holiday to that area tomorrow, I'll be staying in a cottage just a few miles away. I'd love to see Pilot Whales, but absolutely not in those circumstances. Hopefully they'll find their way back out to sea soon.

Loch Carnan is not particularly shallow and is wide open to the east, it is not as if they can't see the way out if they want to go. Small oil tankers use the pier in Loch Carnan. So I don't think they are trapped.
Nobody has seen them attempt to beach themselves, could they have picked up the injuries elsewhere? Could the injuries be the result of fighting during mating or between members of two pods or even with a predator while protecting their young. I guess the only possible predator would be a killer whale.
Are they sheltering from the coming storm (probably not but who knows)?

| | | Re: Possibilty of 100 whales being stranded In the last news program I saw it said one whale had died and they would be testing it to see if it died from a disease. Has anyone heard any more about these whales, are they still too near shore and was the one that died diseased?

| | | Re: Possibilty of 100 whales being stranded The one dead whale that was recovered had died as the result of disease, a second dead whale was not recovered for testing due to bad weather. It seems the rest of them have now left the area.
I've not seen a report since this one. BBC News - Second whale found dead in Loch Carnan
