| | | Re: Personal safety when enjoying the great outdoors. When our first child arrived and began to wonder round the farm my wife (being town bred- was terrified to let him go across the fields in case anything happened to him. I took a long time to convince her that the countryside is a very safe place to live and work in.Thank God that I live on an archipelago of islands where we still wonder freely and greet strangers when we meet wherever we meet.
The only problem is that when I do the same on the Mainland I get some really "snotty" responses.
It is about time that we stopped distrusting everyone that we meet and began to communicate with each other personally rather than through computer media which seems to have become largely the case over the last few years.
I read an account of a persons experiences in Africa in the 1800s.
He said that leopards were killed because their whiskers were believed to contain a poison with which a person could kill another. Not -he said- because all Africans are murderers but because they believed that their neighbours are. They killed the leopard to stop his whiskers being used on themselves. At the time such distrust of ones neighbour was unthinkable.
It occurs to me that most English people are not violent sex attackers or muggers they all believe their neighbour to be one. |

When out Bat watching, I sometimes carry a small flash gun, close your eyes and press the test button, they ain't going nowhere for the moment! walk away.

| | | Re: Personal safety when enjoying the great outdoors. I've just nearly given myself a heart attack. I was creeping around the garden in the dark looking for wood mice as you do and I forgot I was using the Halloween torch. If, as I did, you press a button on the side, the torch screams. I wonder if it would have the same effect on people giving you unwanted attention.
