| | | Smells! Don't you just love the smell of the seasons? Today I drew in lungfuls of Spring! I can't describe the scent. It must be a certain mixture of flowers and blossom that is evocative of childhood Springtime.
I can never decide if Spring or Autumn is my favourite scent .. |

Smells are so evocative aren't they! |

| | | Re: Smells! I know what you mean. I was sprawled out on the floor in the garden earlier, smelling cowslips. It's a faint smell, but ever so like a zesty orange.

| | | Re: Smells! I find it interesting that two very different plants either happen to have a similar set of chemicals or just have some different chemicals that smell the same.
Are there other plants that smell as much like coconut as gorse?
But going back to your question Grim. I can understand what you mean.
These two are not really smells from nature (don't dwell on that too much!) but the smell of the first cut of grass makes me think spring has arrived and, probably because my Dad used to have a greenhouse on his allotment, the smell of tomato plants is summer.
Others are
the very short-lived but intense smell of Lime blossom of summer evenings and the decaying leaves/slightly fungal smell I associated with autumn walks in the wood.

Dorts. | On a hot day, Gorse does indeed smell of coconut, strongly sometimes, especially near the sea I find.
Cheers

I can never decide if Spring or Autumn is my favourite scent .. | I love spring and it is most definitely my favourite season. I'm not sure if the other seasons smell stronger, or if it's my 'hay fever', but I don't really notice spring using my olfactory senses. My sense of smell returns in May and then I just love the scent of mown grass. Then it's hay meadows in summer. And then later I love the smell of rotting leaves in autumn, and the smell of cold air blowing over manured fields. The clear air of winter makes all the smells of evergreens really noticeable. But come late March and I cannot smell properly for a few weeks.

| | | Re: Smells! There is so much smell around that we get very used to it.
I will give two examples of what I mean. I used to go caving, and could be underground for up to 12 hours. Coming back out, the smell of earth, plants and everything is very striking.
I also spent quite a bit of time at sea as a midshipman, with our longest sea passage being 15 days. Getting back into the islands near Socotra, you can smell the land from about 5 miles away. My sense of smell is not as good as it was, but the coconut smell of gorse is delightful.
