| | | Fallow Deer, Glen Muick OH and I had a pleasant but brisk walk in Glen Muick yesterday - Brrrr - and came across a herd of remarkably fearless fallow deer, presumably introduced.
They are bonny, but what do folk here think about these non native species roaming our countryside? |

| | | Re: Fallow Deer, Glen Muick Dora - if you track back through this forum you will find come long threads on invasive spp. I don't think anyone here has any problem with fallow, although they, like any deer, can damage trees.
Welcome to WAB,
Ric

| | | Re: Fallow Deer, Glen Muick Hi Dora Mac,
Are you sure they were Fallow deer?
The Cairngorms National Park Authority cites only the presence of Red deer, Roe deer and some Sika deer within the park boundaries (which includes the Glenmuick and Balmoral estates). |

| | | Re: Fallow Deer, Glen Muick Hi Valleyforge,
I may have my ID wrong in that case. These deer were very pale - creamy in
colour with marked dappling. I do have a couple of photos and will upload them later, once I work out how to do that!
Regards

| | | Re: Fallow Deer, Glen Muick Will be interested to see the photos, but from your description they do sound more like Fallow deer than I'd expect Sika deer pelage to appear at this time of year.
The key identifier for Fallow deer of course is that they have 'palmate' (broad, flattened) antlers that they carry over winter. Sika stags have antlers with a rounded profile.
If there's a Fallow herd now in Glenmuick, then I'd definitely make a trip up to see them. |

| | | Re: Fallow Deer, Glen Muick No, I think these may indeed be Fallow deer ... and clearly not perturbed by your presence.
The relatively long tails on the females and their rump patterns I believe distinguish them from Sika .... the bucks in your photo are too young obviously to have developed palmate antlers.
To be honest, I'm not overly familiar with either species as neither are by any means common in these parts.
Great photos. I must make a trip up to see them too ... didn't know there were any now so close to us.
