| | | Website That Shows Animal Distribution In The UK? Hey Everyone
Somebody showed me a website a few months back - I believe it was scientifically led. On this site you could type a species of animal in and it would show you a map of where they can now be found in the UK (it gives you an idea of which animals are spreading across the country etc).
Unfortunately I didn't bookmark it I'm just wondering if anyone knows of the site?
Many Thanks,
Rob |

A wonderful resource but it's worth remembering that it often runs behind real time - it takes time to plug in the data and staff are not numerous! Also, as ever, some taxa are better represented than others - plants seem to be most up-to-date. It's a very useful resource but worth bearing in minds that there may be omissions.
However, unlike many recording databases on line, it is accurate - records are not entered unless they have been verified.

But there are still residual errors that have sneaked through - only to be expected, with that number of records.
If you discover an error, don't just sneer and gripe about it on the web; let the NBN know about it, they will be grateful.

henrya | Quite right, I shouldn't be so enthusiastic!
You do find the odd highland record turning up in Essex due to a typo but, as you say, soon put right by an e-mail to the recorder! |

Certainly my LRC do no verification that I am aware of, they do not have the time, expertise or manpower.
Any organisation or body can register as an NBN data supplier and send files in to be uploaded to the Gateway - you need to look at the organisation description and metadata associated with the dataset to get some idea of the level of confidence to assign to any particular dot. I know full well there are some "wrong" records on the NBN. Having said all that, the NBN Gateway is an excellent resource and getting better all the time. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
