| | | Flyford Flavell Having a wander around Flyford Flavell yesterday, trying out a couple of the local pubs for Summer Walks and just getting the feel of the place. I was surprised by a Green Woodpecker flaring up about 10 foot away. Buzzards seemed to be in goodly supply too, unless it was the same one following me. Wrens were doing well, the area appears to be fairly mild Wintertime. Ubiquitous Magpies and Blackbirds, Wood-pigeons and Mews. A few Starlings made an appearance towards 16:30. I spotted a solitary Jay and a couple of Rooks. The corvids didn't show themselves a lot during the day, atypical for the Worcester area. Sundry Tits zipping around from garden to garden.
Mammals were rarer, a single Rabbit, two Rats (Black I think) and a glimpse of a Fox come evening.
A bit desolate, but with the cold season still upon us not too bad a showing.

h | The buzzard was following you with a beady gleam in its carrion eating eye. Are you paid up to date with your life insurance?

Baked Mice are quite a treat, as are the pastry sweets of the same name.
Worms (earthworms) Annelidae, are edible, not tasty but an immense amount of work is needed to prepare them for consumption. And unfortunately I like worms so had a trying time of it.
Rat is just a shortened Rabbit. No big deal.
Snakes are ten a penny.
2nd thoughts ! Where could I get a Pygmy from? Any ideas?

| | | Re: Flyford Flavell As I said Woodman, I THINK. No bins and poor light by that time.
If you reckon they were Rattus norvegicus then I bow to your knowledge on this.
htcdude: Have you ever tried to explain Toad-in-the-hole to Europeans or Yanks? They hear the name, develop a look of abject disgust and grimace. Best is, just make, serve, let 'em enjoy it, then tell 'em. Black rats Rattus rattus disallowed but Big Cats allowed! Perhaps Ol' Ratty has become the major food supply for imaginary Giant Moggies!
Back home I could have seen European Hamster Cricetus cricetus, Raccoon Dog Nyctereutes procyonoides or any of the Pine Voles Microtus bavaricus, subterraneus, multiplex, Brown Bear Ursus arctos or even a Gray Wolf Canis lupus. Here, I have to wrangle for a couple of solitary faffin' Rats! Creatures I normally don't even bother to notice! Roll on August!

| | | Re: Flyford Flavell Ach, Greenies are a common thing by me. I see one almost daily. I walk very softly and this poor little Grackle nearly had a heart attack, must have been something very tasty to keep his mind so occupied. Suddenly shooting up just in front of me gave me a start too!
Need more than three pints in a day to make me wear beer specs Woodman, lots more.
