| | | Cambridge reccomendation? I know it's awfully short notice but can anyone reccomend a good place to visit tomorrow within about 30 mins of Cambridge? Preferably somewhere with hides. Either that or good winter scenery for landscape photography.
Thanks in advance!

| | | Re: Cambridge reccomendation? Alternatively, there was a report of 4 Smew including a drake, at Fen Drayton Lakes this afternoon. Plus Bitterns. Keep your eye open for Waxwings in Cambridge, as there's been a few around. |

| | | Re: Cambridge reccomendation? alternately if you want somewhere closer to cambridge there is milton country park just north of the A14, and wandlebury countrypark and nature reserve just to the south east of cambridge on the A1307

| | | Re: Cambridge reccomendation? Fen Drayton is probably the best in terms of quality and distance - it's a new RSPB reserve.
You can check out local sightings here: cambirds : Mailing list for birdwatchers and ornithologists in the Cambridge, UK area. To share sightings and other information
Apparently 8 Bitterns today. And there's usually a roost of a few thousand Starlings
For landscape, you can simply try the Backs in Cambridge, or Grantchester Meadows. Problem with the reserves on the Fens is that there's few vantage points over the tops of the reeds!

| | | Re: Cambridge reccomendation? Wow! Thanks very much for all the suggestions.
I think I'll give Fen Drayton Lakes a try. It's only 14 mins away from the Trumpington Park & Ride according to Autoroute, which is just about perfect. Wicken Fen is still high on my list but I think I'll leave that til the summer when the dragonflies and the cuckoos are about. Plus there's talk of a WAB meet there.
I won't be able to stick around for the starling roost unfortunately as I need to be back in th ecity centre by 3pm at the latest, but smew and bitterns sound good.
Thanks again for all the suggestions, folks - much appreciated!

You may find this useful: map of FDL
The main car park is on Holywell Ferry road, just N of Holywell Lake.
