I'm sure that The Emperor would have a had a better chance with wolves than he did against a far more deadly predator armed with a high calibre rifle.
Studies in Poland have shown that a healthy wolf population leads to bigger specimens of red deer. Exmoor's red deer are the largest in the British Isles, in themselves worthy contenders for a symbolic British animal or species. A pity someone had to shoot the very best of the breed. |

Yes, I favour the Wolf too, though not an animal currently associated with Britain. Unfortunately and wrongly, the Wolf has a bad press and too many folks are scared of them.

Unfortunately and wrongly, the Wolf has a bad press and too many folks are scared of them. | The Polish study I mentioned, was based in the Carpathians. It tracked back in parish records for two or three hundred years, looking for evidence of wolf attacks and found none. In reality they are shy creatures. I spent a week wandering around woods that had healthy populations of wolves and never even heard one.
In the UK Wolves would eat sheep and that would be a problem but if they were allowed to be hunted they would stand a chance of surviving since hunting interests would most likely protect them from farmers. This is what happens in Poland. Very few wolves are shot by hunters but their unprotected status ensures that someone - the stalkers - care enough about them to look out for poisoned carcasses, the most common way of killing them among farmers. The scientists leading this study concluded that protected status would be more detrimental to the welfare of Polish wolves than a law that allowed a measure of hunting. |
