Skye here I come!

I can't believe it! My mum and dad have decided we're all going to Skye next year in May. I'm so excited I've always wanted to go to 'the Misty Isle'.

They've given me the job of finding a cottage so I'm just about to google and look for some searches. I'm so happy

Re: Skye here I come!

The most worrying things was as we were in a national park and rhino's are protected the two guides were armed with nowt but a walking stick !!
Not only that....when the first rhino came hurtling out of the elephant grass charging at full speed less than 10 foot away the two "guides" ( Tiny little indian lads) nearly knocked me over as they legged it past me !!....yeah cheers.

as im running through the thick vegetation from the angry rhino im remembering the guides advice to look out not only for rhino , but the tigers that have killed a few villagers in the last week and also the sloth bears which scarily kill more people than tigers...
Scared? me?......i was.....*xxx%342)!!!**8* myself.

That sounds awful Dan! I would have been caking my pants with fright. Remind me never to go on one of them safaris!

P.S. Anyone know any good Skye websites for general information?

My partner and I spent a week on Skye during October. Our first time. I can thoroughly recommend it. There are plenty of b and b's and self catering cottages. I would recommend the cottage that we stayed in, but its only for two people.
Take good walking boots and waterproofs! Most of the attractions are off the main road and into the hills.
May I suggest a day trip to Harris and Lewis as well. Definately worth it. We were so impressed that we've decided to honeymoon on Harris.

Hi Nicola

I hope you do better than we did in May 2005. It's not called the Misty Isle for nothing. We gave up after three days of continual rain and mist that was down to ground level. The one day we had there where we could see what we doing was brilliant and it is obvious that when the weather is right then the potential to enjoy the wildlife could be amazing.

Any way, you wanted a link. Here they are.
Bird sightings on the Island of Skye
Birds of Trotternish, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Wild Skye: a weblog for news of birds and other wildlife on the misty isle
The official website for Skye, Lochalsh and Raasay in the north west of Scotland

There is a book of birds of Skye written by Robert L McMillan. He is an RSPB man that lives in Elgol and he gets most of the birds reported to him that are found on Skye.
http://www.nhbs.com/skye_birds_tefno_140796.html

That little lot should do you.

John

Re: Skye here I come!

We have finally booked the cottage we are going to be staying at on Skye! It's an old thatched croft house called Tigh Mairi and we've booked it from the 19-26th May. There is more information here Mary's Cottages - Self Catering accomodation at Elgol on the Isle of Skye

My friend, Steve, said I can borrow his camera so I will be taking loads of photos so I can show you when I come back!

From a very, very, very excited Nicola!

Re: Skye here I come!

If you want to go for a long day trip you can pop over and see me on the Uists! Just let me know and I will get the Stornoway Black pudding ready....the recent heavy rain has meant the haggis has emigrated to South Africa!

Spent many a happy hour in Skye, the Fairy Glen at Uig is an incrediable place to visit

Enjoy your trip and I can guarrentee you will return again and again to the Hebrides...I went on Holiday to the Hebrides 4 years ago love, now I live and work here.....also met my man here!

Re: Skye here I come!

Nicola

I have just caught up with this despite you posting on 9th December 2006.

Skye is just brilliant what ever the weather. I have been there many times and I am sure you will find yourself returning again and again. You will enjoy yourself hugely.

By the way, I have stayed at Mary's Cottages .... excellent accommodation!

Just make sure you check out the view of the Black Cuillins just down the road from Mary's Cottages at Elgol pier .... it is just awesome!

Hopefully, you have checked out John's suggested links as they all have very useful information. I would also strongly recommend the book he has suggested. I have a copy and it is invaluable.

Whilst you are on Skye, do drop in to the Tourist Information Centre by the garage in Broadford as they do maintain a list of up to date wildlife sightings.

I expect a full trip report and a gallery full of photos. Nothing less will do if you visit Skye!

One last thing. You can over the bridge to Skye from Kyle of Lochalsh but the only real way to arrive is by boat, either the CalMac ferry from Mallaig to Armdale or the little car ferry from Glenelg to Kylerhea. The latter is particularly memorable.

Glenelg-Kylerhea ferry

Have a great time .... May is not too far off now.

Richard

Re: Skye here I come!

Hi there,

I'm sure you'll love it here. You might want to check out my website, - link removed

I've just started a new forum including a board for wildlife sightings. Check out the Skye Info - History, Culture and Nature for articles on some of the wildlife, and links to the walks where you can see them.

Hope this is of some use.
