| | Re: Using nature's materials I too like stones with holes or cavities in, and I fill with soil and sow or plant something appropriately small in it.....Also I've got a habit I just cannot shake off, ....When I'm out on the land, If I find a feather or feathers, I just can't resist wearing them in my hair, like an American Indian........ |

| | | Re: Using nature's materials Feathers in head /behind ears is what I play at too, eventually putting them upright in a rotting gatepost and see if theyre there next time I come along..........
But I cant resist stones, even from Greece in my baggage, not been told off yet - Green slate from Buttermere and Cemlyn bay (Anglesey) black pebbles are my favourites, plus granite stuff from the top of Scotish peaks like Ben Nevis and Mica schist from Ben Lawers, plus limestone from the Burren (all very small bits!), granite boulders from west scotland and so on - limestone pebbles with holes in are good for incense holders.
Plus Ilike fishermens floats in Ireland.
Bit of a nut really, but never take too much or ruin habitats etc .
Cheers
Ken

| | Re: Using nature's materials Yes, I like stones too, but as I don't go out and about much, I'm a bit restricted, we've lots of flintstones, which are very interesting shapes, and can usually be likened to the shapes of the animal kingdom. BUT, when work is being done and 40 ton loads of stones come in of different sorts, different grades and from different locations, I spend more time than enough looking at the piles of beautiful 'different' stones. I often wonder what it does to the earth energies, moving stuff around like this. We've got a few bits of Purbeck Rock, left over from another site, and some really big flints from the fields here, I can't lift them, you wouldn't want them in your suitcase.. |

| | | Re: Using nature's materials The smaller stones with holes thru were thought to repel witches and nightmares. My daughter had a collection of them from Whitstable strung on a rope to use as a 'chain' in the loo. Years ago I had a jay's feather and a (dead) stag beetle in a matchbox but my mother 'spring-cleaned' them into the rubbish bin. I'm still lokking for replacements |

| | | Re: Using nature's materials I collect all sorts of bits and pisces. Stones, pebbles, shells, feathers, fir cones, seed pods/heads, leaves, grasses, twigs etc etc.
A few natural objects arranged in a decorative vase or bowl can make the loveliest table/sideboard feature.
I also dabble in a bit of Ikebana too!
My garden is full of unusual shaped logs that a tree surgeon friend of mine kindly gave me. He cut holes in some of them which I planted up with alpines.
They look really lovely!
He's also an excellent wood turner, so I have a few wooden toadstools dotted around too.
I also have large rocks here and there which have seams of spa and crystal running through them.
Can't wait to get out in the garden and add bits to it later on in the year!
