Sorry about quality of images but it was a bit distant for my camera to focus.
I am not even going to guess what it is because I will probably make a fool of myself (again).     |

There is the possibility it is a squirrel wound to the leading shoot which has callused over in an extreme way as the colour is similar to the bark.
