it loosley translates to someone walking along a path flanked on either side with nettles, while the path itself was blocked by "muck", and having to make a choice as to which route to take,
a bit like "damned if you do, damned if you dont" sort of thing,
i'll leave it to your imagination what the "muck" refers to
