Hi Posie,
it loosley translates to someone walking along a path flanked on either side with nettles, while the path itself was blocked by "muck", and having to make a choice as to which route to take,

a bit like "damned if you do, damned if you dont" sort of thing,

i'll leave it to your imagination what the "muck" refers to

it's probably just local to notts/yorks then, i used to hear it quite frequently but its probably fallen into disuse nowadays ?

often used round here in the north west 'it was muck or nettles' in other words neither choice prefferable
