| | | About a hundred holes in the grass Each is about 1" in diameter. Some describe a line that meanders across the grass. I have no idea what lives down them. Holes too small for rats, I'm told. Voles? Someone suggested slow worms.
We live out in the country on the Hereford/Worcester border if that helps. I can also take photographs but not sure what value that would add. |

Ockham's Razor, the most simple explanation is probably the correct one.

| | | Re: About a hundred holes in the grass id say voles or moles.
we've had both.
our garden is spongy in places.
one thing that may get rid of them humanely is to buy some small kiddies windmills,
sink them into the ground and apparently the vibration of them spinning discourages the moles. dont know about voles, but somehow i think its more likely moles as ive heard they do a lot of damage to lawns.
if that idea dont work then pls look for another humane method. |

| | | Re: About a hundred holes in the grass If they are just holes and not tunnels, it is possibly Rooks foraging for grubs. We get this sometimes (uaually about the time the daddy longlegs are about to emmerge from the ground September - October) and it does actually look like loads of bullet holes thogh the holes tend to be conical from the shape of the beak |

We live out in the country on the Hereford/Worcester border if that helps. I can also take photographs but not sure what value that would add. | I've seen the same in a field near me and wondered what they were - I've dismissed aliens and meerkats as if it were either of them I'm sure I would've noticed before now
They are quite regular in size and appear to be quite deep but there is no spoil - I went back this morning to take a look - I did wonder whether they were something to do with moles as there are lots of mole hills in the area but I've just googled that and it would appear to not to be.
I found someone else asking a similar question elsewhere and it was suggested that it might be short tailed voles? |

| | | Re: About a hundred holes in the grass you are correct in that the holes are not from moles as there would be hills left, but i have come across multiple holes in lawn of a private garden and they were the result of wasps so please be careful,i hope this been of help |

| | | Re: About a hundred holes in the grass Starlings, Blackbirds, Green Woodpeckers, all will dig holes in lawns after ants or grubs, but going by the size of the holes, I would say Teal is right with his suggestion of Rooks.
Neil.
PS. Rooks on stilts, that is. |
