About a hundred holes in the grass

We live out in the country on the Hereford/Worcester border if that helps. I can also take photographs but not sure what value that would add.

I've seen the same in a field near me and wondered what they were - I've dismissed aliens and meerkats as if it were either of them I'm sure I would've noticed before now

They are quite regular in size and appear to be quite deep but there is no spoil - I went back this morning to take a look - I did wonder whether they were something to do with moles as there are lots of mole hills in the area but I've just googled that and it would appear to not to be.

I found someone else asking a similar question elsewhere and it was suggested that it might be short tailed voles?

you are correct in that the holes are not from moles as there would be hills left,but i have come across multiple holes in lawn of a private garden and they were the result of wasps so please be careful,i hope this been of help

if there are no hills then its not moles.

i hope londonman returns, so we can come to the correct conclusion
he doesnt mention hills, but he may have left that bit out ?

Starlings, Blackbirds, Green Woodpeckers, all will dig holes in lawns after ants or grubs, but going by the size of the holes, I would say Teal is right with his suggestion of Rooks.
