| | | Just watched fox documentary over Youtube In the end a pregnant vixen and her mate were shot dead because they killed someones chickens, the female was shot then the male started screaming for her as if he knew something was wrong, he came and found her and he seemed devastated and then was shot while he tried to sniff her.
All the while i was watching the posh prat who owned the house and listening to his highly annoying voice thinking....For chickens?...a pregnant wild animal and her mate are shot....for chickens? i can understand in the countryside i really can but this isnt the countryside and he was not making a living on it,
What seriously pissed me off was the constant use of the word "pest" THIS WORD SHOULD BE BANNED IT IS MEANINGLESS AND SEEMS TO BE USED AS TO SAY THEREFORE THIS ANIMAL CAN BE ERADICATED, IF IS A xexexexexexexe MORONIC WORD.
Iam no tree huger and think that animals should be shot and killed for food and to protect live stock, no to eradicate a animal but to control them taking animals...but not like this.
To see the film go to youtube and type in Urban Red Fox: 'Meet the Foxes' - Part 1 of 6 |

Cheers,
Marc. | I agree 100% Marc, I remember it making me so angry when it was shown initially.

| | | Re: Just watched fox documentary over Youtube I'm a meat eater and comfortable with the idea that cows, sheep and pigs are raised and killed for me to eat. Any mice that come into my house will meet a killing trap, but I would not dream of killing the same mouse out in the garden.
The thing that really annoys me about the attitude of some (and I stress some) land/farm owners is they put up something (eg a chicken run) without thinking how they can protect their animals.
Heard about one guy who had free range chickens and was losing loads to foxes, he then put up an electric fence and lost hardly any. His view was shooting or trapping the foxes would be easier and certainly cheaper, but another fox would just move in and take chickens until he killed that one, etc. So living with them but managing their access was a far better way. |

| Unfortunately, there has to be some kind of label and whilst I agree with your point within the gist of this thread, the word 'pest' in this context is used to denote that a species' natural behaviour is at odds with human activity (usually agriculture of some kind). The alternative is 'vermin' and some country folk use this term even though it has no recognition in wildlife law because it has emotive connotations. I don't necessarily agre that the word 'pest' means a species can be eradicated or controlled at will but the term 'vermin' is certainly taken to mean just that. In this case, prevention would have been better (as mentioned in another post) because had this been a bird (cormorants at a fishery for example) there would have been an onus to prove that adequate preventative measures had been tried first. Prosecutions are rare but indiscriminate control of wild animals for pest reasons is still potentially a crime under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Sadly, there seems to be much less care when it comes to mammals than would be the case with birds. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
