But you already know that when it rains in summer, the 'dormant' Nostoc absorbs the moisture, swells up and becomes noticeable. Oh drat, I've done all the work for you.
Oh well, you could always try your hand at fungi.

Also in other research on the web there were lab tests done on a material such as this showing no DNA in specimens tested. I would surmise both Nostoc commune and fungi would have a tracable DNA in them.
Although this is besides the point of any form of patterns I was looking for as to when it appears on open ground away from common areas of water.
