Hi
We have two swans and 6 cygnets in the small bay at my village.

Over the past few days the male swan sometimes does not seem to show any interest and sits away from the rest - sometimes with his head round to his back.

Is this normal practice

Similar to the couple of Swans on our pond. The male doesn't really take an interest - but try getting close to the cygnets and that's when he does take an interest - in you

ron has the gist of it, male swans are quite happy to do nithing, untill another bird invades their territory, or a percieved predator arrives at which point they attack.

in extreme cases they will actively kill smaller species.
but in the main they just chase other male swans round in circles endlessly all day
