Many years ago I was fishing on the local Macclesfield Canal. It was very early morning in June with the first sun's rays just hitting the water. It was very still, not a breath of wind, and the water surface looked...well...sort of dusty, and with rising mist.
Its strange look must have confused a magpie, because it tried to land on the canal, near to the far bank, and it was then unable to take off again. The sides of the canal had been reinforced by steel piling driven into the banking, and so the bird was in trouble. No way out. But it flapped its way across the surface, straight in my direction until it was right near my feet, and looked up at me imploringly. I was able to reach down and lift the bird out of the water.
I have always been struck by what seemed to be a reasoned and intelligent action by this magpie, and by the apparent trust it had placed in me. I know it sounds hard to credit, but the bird appeared to know what it was doing, and that its only chance of rescue lay with me.
It did of course still try to peck me as I released it.

Nice story Jays, on the same theme as the original post in this thread. ....I was sent an email last year with pictures, about a duck, in USA, who hatched her nest of ducklings on a ledge on the first floor of an office block. The chap whose office it was helped her get the ducklings down to the ground, then led her, she followed him with line of little ducklings behind her, several blocks away to the water. It was featured in the national newspapers etc. I cant think 'why' she made her nest so far away from water, but the heartwarming story touched many lives,... so perhaps that's 'why'..............Posie..
