What's going on here?

I came across this a couple of weeks ago - a rather large patch of fur/hair which I think may be deer related? There are Fallow Deer in the area and I've come across similar clumps of hair on other walks which I have always thought them to come from deer.

Never seen anything like this before though.

It covered such a reasonably large area that I initially thought something had been killed but there were no remains or anything else other than all these clumps of hair.

Was this in a sheep field, it looks as though a farmer has lost a sheep and taken away the carcase but something has had a go at it during the night.

Agreed, that's sheep's wool. Deer hairs stay as individual hairs rather than ending up as lumps of wool.
