| | | Green Jelly ID Sorry for putting this in the general wildlife forum, but I have no idea what this green jelly is. The photo is from Sunday morning. The jelly is about the size of a one pence piece, and was on a partly submerged slab on a chalk stream. The bubbles to the front left are from the blabbling brook. The green jelly looks like it has air bubbles in it but they may be eggs, I really don't know.
Any ideas?
Thanks
BWD

| | | Re: Green Jelly ID BWD,
I posted something similar a few weeks ago, it looks very much like green algae, with air bubbles being generated inside as it flourishes in the sun.
Cant remember the name, will look it up again (aging memory probs) and let you know. Later - try Nostoc spp.
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: Green Jelly ID Just possible this might be Caddis fly eggs (188 British species) and there is a picture of such in the Gallery. Yours looks a little looser than the other pictures, but it's just possible if might be from the same family, particularly in view of where you found it.

| | | Re: Green Jelly ID diggleken, sorry for missing your earlier post, I had never concidered algae before, only thought you would find it in water. I suppose this may have been dragged out by something and left on the side. So much to learn
Tinkerbell, I'm off to look at caddis fly eggs now. I wasn't sure if it was eggs or not.
Thanks both.

| | | Re: Green Jelly ID Caddis flies usually lay their eggs on vegetation, not sure any are active in winter either. Could be snail eggs? I also ruled out Chironomid eggs on the size. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
