| | | Microscopic life inside a fungus
Attempting to identify this fungus (a species of Peziza that various members on the Fungi Forum are helping me with - thanks all) I needed to do a bit of microscopy and was amazed to find a whole variety of other life inside the tissue of the fungus.
A nematode worm
No idea
Possibly an algae?
A diatom
Another diatom possible the same as the first one but from a different angle.
Maybe another diatom
I was quite amazed at the diversity of things inside this thing - the whole thing is only about 1.5cm across but is in a sense a microscopic ecosystem all of its own

It's been many years since I last had anything to do with such small things, but Anabaena sp. emerged from the dregs in my mind for your possible algae. I'm probably wrong, but if not I shall be amazed at what can lurk in the memory for so long! |

| | | Re: Microscopic life inside a fungus I've been looking forward to this thread since you announced it at lunchtime and boyo, it meets expectations!!! How stunning Rob- how do you get such amazing colours in your shots? Do you use stains?
I've seen a Nematode and various other living organisms, and how fascinating!
Excellent images of a purely fascinating subject! |

Excellent images of a purely fascinating subject! | I've been experimenting with Lactophenol Cotton Blue and with Melzers (spelling could be wrong) reagent and then just using the automatic white balance setting to get rid of any colour cast in Photoshop Elements. I don't seem to be able to match the sharpness you've been getting with soem of your asco shots.
I'm looking forward to the day I find a Tardigrade or Rotifer in one of the samples - might have to try some mosses to give myself a better chance.

I have to ferret around and see if I can find a Rotifer one for you.

| | | Re: Microscopic life inside a fungus That is just amazing Rob.
I am genuinely worried that this is interesting me so much that I'm going to go looking for Water Bears- never going to be a problem doing that sort of thing but hell, it's more time I haven't got to spare!
I love the look of this |

They party trick is turning into a cyst when times are hard and waiting for better conditions. Ive dug out a book and in the cyst form they can withstand a vacuum, radiation, 100% pure alchohol emersion (sounds like my uni flat mate!) and temepratures from -271 to 149C. And there also known as water bears.
Rotifers are single celled planktonic predatory things, and not as hardy I'd imagine |
