| | | Where Can I Find Glow Worms? Noticed the thread on glow worms - would love to see them myself.
So I wondered if we could use this thread to post sightings of rare/wonderful/beautiful creatures here to help those of us who'd like to see something special? |

| | | Re: Where Can I Find? You can always check out the NBN Gateway ( www.searchnbn.net) - it doesn't have everything, but it certainly will tell you where to find Glow-worms.

| | | Re: Where Can I Find? Plenty on Suffolk's Sandling Heaths normally I see them when Nightjarring, Also we have them on our local marshes. Are there any heaths near you? If so try the edges of tracks at night or under Bramble bushes at night.
Good Luck

| | | Re: Where Can I Find? I remember - when I lived down in the (wonderful) South Hams in Devon - walking back from the local hostelry and having my homeward path guided (no streetlamps here) by a plenitude of female glow-worms. They tried their best but I still managed to meander into a ditch for the night... |

| | | Re: Where Can I Find? I first saw them quite a few years ago on Dunwich and Westleton Heaths - also while looking for nightjars!
Was told recently that they are around the Arnside area which despite my intimate knowledge of that area managed to surprise me! I haven't checked this out yet - will reply again if I get chance to go and have a look - or even better actually find them!

| | | Re: Where Can I Find? Within easy range of Stoke-on-Trent is Beeston in Cheshire (Near Tarporley) just need to go to the point where the A 49 crosses the Shropshire Union Canal and passes beneath the Crewe to Chester Railway, visit at the right time and you will see little green glows!

I understand that there are glowworms in the area of the old Churnet Valley Railway near Alton Towers.
Best times?dates for looking are after 2330 from around 20th June to 20th July. Mid-summer night should be ideal! |

| | | Re: Where Can I Find? Used to see quite a few glow worms around the small village of Caudle Green near where I used to live and also think there were some around Stroud commons but don't know if they're still about. Isn't it just the males that glow or something?

| | | Re: Where Can I Find? One of the best sites in the country is along the old railway between Ashchurch and Tewkesbury ..... I believe that this colony usually has the greatest number. It is the female that glows. |
