Having read the article, it is clear he is a total halfwit. Thank god two other gamekeepers had the sense to report him.

The most annoying thing about this is the slap on the wrist that the courts have given him.

Well done to the other two gamekeepers for taking a stance though.

IMO gamekeeping should be a licensed occupation. If you are caught doing this sort of thing your license could then be taken away permanently. What are other peoples thoughts on this?

Having read the article too .. I was dismayed (but not surprised) at the inane comments made by the completely out-of-touch-with-reality Chairman of the Bench ...

"Showed remorse" .. course he did .. he got caught !

"Previous good character" = as yet un-detected offences

"Were it not for your age" .. if the young men & women of our Armed Forces are old enough at 18 to serve (and die) in Iraq & Afghanistan ... this man is old enough and should have gone to prison ..

Oh .. sorry .. silly me .. I forgot, prisons are full of little old ladies who didn't pay their Poll Tax ...

Even his own defence solicitor said .. "He was brought up in the countryside" & so he knew full well what he was doing and that it was unlawful ..

Alongside him in the Dock should have been the people responsible for putting him under pressure to supply a given quantity of birds ... that however in no way excuses his behaviour ..

When .. oh when, are we going to see some sort of common sense from our Judiciary ???? .. (I won't be holding my breath) ...

Well done to the responsible law-abiding gamekeepers.

This sadistic half-wit should have been jailed- his age here should have been irrelevant.

Personally I'd like to have seen him strung up on his own gibbet!!!

Yes I agree!

It does make you wonder why some people get pleasure from killing animals. They must have something fundamentally wrong with their brain.

It unfortunately lumps legitimate, properly trained gamekeepers together in some folks eyes. This is a shame for those who game-keep within the proper boundaries of their job.

The guardians of the law in this country seem to be on a completely different wavelength to the vast majority of the population.

When one of the political parties has the bottle to put a mandate of zero tolerance on ALL crime they would surely get votes like never before.

I'll end this now before I completely go off on one!

Thanks LL .. summat of a surprise .. a Lancs Lad & a Yorkie agreeing about owt ...

The main problem with Law & Order in this country is the CPS (Criminal Protection Service) .. whose lawyers weren't clever enough to get into private practice ... they insist on an almost 90% chance of a conviction before taking any case to Court .. this means that the Police are tied up gathering huge amounts of largely irrelevant paperwork to convince them ..

The CPS does this so that almost every case they prosecute appears to be a success .. & the Government doesn't have to admit that the CPS is an abject failure .. which means that the vast majority of offences committed & detected never even come before the Courts ..

Add to this the fact that this particular case was tried by a "Lay" Bench .. no doubt made up of well-meaning but largely clueless people .. advised by the Clerk of the Court .. and this is a typical result ..

Oh for a return to the days of the good, old-fashioned Stipendiary Magistrates .. who knew the real "score" ...

But again .. breath-holding is not advised ...

I've even been known to risk a covert trip across the border into Yorkshire - Under cover of darkness though. (Wouldn't want to risk the wrath of the white rose mafia.
