What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

I guess I'm posing this question for the younger members of WAB, but I'm happy to hear from anyone... young, middle and old!

I'm running a Wildlife project in my village (it's a very big village of 10,000 residents) and we are trying to think of ways of getting teenagers (especially aged between 14-19) involved in wildlife.

What sort of things would you suggest? What would have got you involved in wildlife in your teens? or if you ARE in your teens, what sort of things are you looking for or interested in doing?

I'm really interested to hear peoples views... doesn't matter what the suggestion is, we want to consider everything and anything.

Thanks. Jane

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

First off they need to be approached by a half decent, young-minded person, one who is in touch with their culture. A good mix of humour and passion helps along with a good knowledge base of groovy vibes so that you can talk to them about other things. Oh, and a few 'fit' members of the opposite sex

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

yeah 'fit' members of the opposite sex would do very nicely!! Im 14 and i like photographing wildlife - but if you cant do that then try to look at as many different things as you can. I think this will show them how much is out there and hopefully how endless the excitement is....oh and maybe throw in a few rarities if you can.
A hands on approach might be good....like getting their hands dirty kinda thing - pond dipping erm...you could try getting them to find the wildlife rather than you pointing it out....hope I've helped but its hard to say because i love wildlife already and they probably wont at the mo and to be honest liking wildlife if you are between 14 and 19 is unfortunately 'uncool'

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

i agree with all that galanthus said plus .my kids want to get stuck in,hands on style .try to avoid projects where they cant really do much and have to spend time watching and waiting as they will get bored .my boyes enjoyed cleaning out our pond, making fences, tending to the bird table, strimming grass that kind of thing.there is somthing for everyone even if its only making tea,

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

Hi. Thanks for replies so far. I really giggled at the "fit opposite sex" bit.... (why hadn't I thought of that!)

Why is liking wildlife between 14-19 uncool.... I don't get it. You are right Leifus we are trying to get people who have no liking for it at the moment... and show them how great it can be. Uphill struggle... but there must be some way - it's just finding the right one.

When you say "throw in a few rarities" what do you mean exactly? That intrigues me!

Thanks...

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

maybe like something rare but beautiful - i know your not going to be able to do this but something like a slipper orchid - hard to match i know but I know I love finding rare things so maybe they will too - as ive said its hard to say because i love wildlife but they dont....

I guess its uncool because its apparently much more fun to be lying on the sofa and playing the xbox and shooting people yaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnn!!!!!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - woooops sorry - anyway yeah getting involved with plenty to do is vital i think....

not that i mind having the countryside to myself tho but it would be great to have someone my own age who i could go to nature reserves with and stuff - find rare flowers and dragonflies etc etc etc....ah well good luck!!!

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

I certainly dont qualify for the 14-19 age group but maybe by rarities its meant someting like asking the rapture centre to bring along some birds of prey or something that will be exciting to initially capture their attention.

Instill the idea that you can still sit glued to the computer but on WAB instead of facebook

Years ago I got involved in my daughters school and started the clearing of the overgrown woodland into a nature trail and building a natural pond which they loved because it was hands on and dirty work

Good luck you will enjoy it and its a great idea

Linda

I wish you lived closer Leifus I too crave companions to go searching for rare and wonderful things with. Okay, i'm 20, but still! My missus is 18 and she's a fair companion, but I always feel like i'm forcing her to learn- she insists I'm not though! I know I'm not forcing her, but It's hard to believe that she takes an interest in such geeky things like mycology

Hay Nick, what's geeky about wanting to learn about your environment and the flora and fauna it contains. It's only geeky to people who have no interest in it.

I know, but on 'the outside world' it's a geeky thing. Of course I don't consider it geeky, but if people do consider it geeky, then it doesn't bother me.

with this in mind you could approach your local .V project to see if you can get some young volunteers to help you out.

(from the contact details .V website
Name: Dorset Youth Association
Address:
Dorchester,
Dorset,
DT1 1HY
Local Authorities: Christchurch, East Dorset, North Dorset, Purbeck, West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland
Telephone: (013 05) 26 2440
Email: v.devmanager@btconnect.com)

for those that dont know .V is the govt supported organisation promoting volunteering for 16-25 year olds

there is also a certain ammount of cash available for youth led projects etc.

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

Thanks for all your idea.... keep them coming they are brilliant.

I really wanted to keep it to our village young people (so the v-team wouldn't really be applicable - but they are a really great organisation).

I think peoples idea of "active stuff" makes a lot of sense - but will local young people come and help clean-up a local wood? or help make paths? or help make and put up bird and bat boxes?

I'm sure they WOULD enjoy it once they got into it.... but it's the initial "getting them involved" that worries me.

You younger members of WAB.... what got you involved in wildlife in the first place? your parents? a teacher? another friend? where and when did your interest and love of wildlife begin?

Thanks again for all your input...

Jane

My love of wildlife began a long, long time ago. Please forgive me for the external link, but it is relevant and I assure you it's not a shameless plug!

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

Hmmm interesting...

What worries me tigger...if your having to ask things like "Whats so uncool about liking widllife between 14-19" then alarms bells ring that you really dont understand teenagers so your probably going to struggle with this idea...

The teenage life is a trecherous one.....trust me i was bullied for pretty much my whole school life....the slightest tinyest little thing is a good enough reason to be bullied...kids are and can be very nasty and cruel...

I had the lot...
No dad (parents divorced) which in my day was reason to be picked on(maybe not these days?)
I was shortest in my year (still short)
I had to have braces on my teeth
I got puppy fat
I have naturally very curly/afro hair
I was a late starter in terms of puberty
I am circumsised....yes...oh bullies LOVE that one!!
I liked birdwatching......OOPS....there it is!

With all i had going against me, i lived in fear of people knowing i did birdwatching or fed the garden birds...so i pretty much hid it away until very recently.
BUT....i could AWLAYS without any fear talk about birds of prey or falconry....talking about watching a kestrel....
or having pet sloworms....hunting for Grass Snakes..

Birdwatching?....i would be punched kicked and spat on....bieng 'into eagles and stuff'....cool as hell!

I agree about the bird centre idea...get someone to bring in an eagle owl or a peregrine....or find a local reptile group to not only wow them with a 12 ft reticulated python but maybe show them our own 'POISONOUS' Adder? or our our Grass Snake etc

Your battle will be that probably 90% of the kids secretly love birds or would love to raise tadpoles but wont dare admit that for fear of being laughed out of the 'gang' etc....
The trick i believe is sadly to think like a bully....or the victim i guess, and think of ways of doing something in such a cool way that even the BULLY (or the coolest kid) will accept it?....If mr cool (who is usually your ring leader) gives something the 'cool' factor your 99% there.

Off the top of my head...stuff at night? adds a bit of danger/excitement...so maybe bat detectors?....moth trap?...glow worm hunt!! now that will win anyone over trust me...they will turn there noses up and thinks its 'lame' etc until they come across there first glowing little alien ufo thing in the grass

Avoid the stereotype of girl stuff and boy stuff as girls love danger just as much but maybe also offer rearing moths and butterfly's from eggs?...growing wildflower seeds...im not sure when they would have last gone with the school but maybe a trip to the natural history museum or something to get them back into the idea of nature which may have been lost on them since they discovered sex, drugs, drinking, smoking and that awful stuff they call dance music? ha ha...then you can look at projects...building a wildlife garden, sorting out the village pond...putting up OWL and KESTREL boxes (Birds of PREY ) ....building a hybernaculum for snakes?...
What area are you in?....do some research and find out (like Kent) if you have many reports of BIG CATS wild in your area like we do?...they wont believe your even telling the truth until they go and read/google it...maybe a big cat watch/hunt?....

Good luck.

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

Hi Dan

I guess I am playing "devils advocate" a bit. I know why "I" think people would think it was "uncool" but really wanted to hear it from guys like you.

Funnily enough the first event we put on was a "Twilight walk to find Nightjars and Glowworms". You are right, the thrill of being out on the heath at night was great, and the younger members of our group were brilliant at finding the glowworms. That event had young and old in it... and to be honest each seemed to bounce off each others enthusiasm.

Our next event is a "wetland wander"... looking for signs of Otters and Water Voles. Then in October we have a moth trap, bat detecting night and next day we are looking at the moths and opening small mammal traps. I'm beginning to think that maybe we are on the right lines... but I would also love to get our local youngsters interested in some actual "conservation" work...

I guess the thing I struggle with is actually "getting" them interested enough to turn up in the first place. Would bribes help? and if so what? food? freebies?

Keep the ideas coming! Jane

They would if you provided a barbeque or similar during or afterwards

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

What about camping? a day of conservation work followed by onsite camping fun...camp fire...bar b q etc? so i agree with galanthus.

Ahhhh...book ray mears!! or similar...there are lots of wilderness schools and survival schools who could probably come to you to do some stuff, they would LOVE THAT...and so would i?

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

kids are young adults and have thereown intrests you wont attract all of them just as you wouldnt attract all the adults.i wouldnt worry you will get some turn out and the ones that turn up will be for real.i would think that a few genuine teenagers taking it seriously would be very rewarding and from small acorns grow big oak trees

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

Dan, you poor boy!

I never realised that you had such a troubled life as a youngster, bless you! Awwwww!

I knew we had a lot in common, but not so much!

I was raised in children's homes from the age of 2 in the 1950's and 60's, not a nice place to be! Foster homes were no better then! Are they now??????

I recently spent 4 years working with pre-16s who had been permenantly excluded from school. Usually for bad behaviour. I could relate to that!
I had great success with these students as they could relate to me (even though I was an old fart!) as I spoke their language (true!).

I would have the girls in hysterics when I said a guy was 'Buff' or 'Hot' as it was not politically correct! (In their terms).

I have recently applied to a local college for a teaching job so I shall see how it goes.......... High hopes there?

I knew you had a depth of character Dan but did not realise how deep that goes, bless you!

I knew you were a lovely guy when we 'met' here, but did not realise that you were such a special kind of guy!!!

Re: What will get teenagers interested in Wildlife?

a bbq would go down well afterwards and my parents first got me into wildlife (properly at about the age of 11). My Dad was into insects and my mum into wildflowers and by taking me out and pointing out the different things my interest grew. Oh and I think one of the reasons I love wildlife is that at the age of 6/7 I looooovvvveeeddd pokemon!! I really wanted to get all the different types - and i want to do the same with wildlife - see everything (not into pokemon anymore by the way )
