Food for Crows

I cycle everyday to work, apart from Sunday and cycle along a disused road, which is now a cycle-way. I often see Crows perched along the fence, also Magpies. Over the last year, I've been taking bits of scraps of left-over chicken, meat or bread.

Although, it is not everyday I do this with the feeding of scraps. But the Crows are getting clever and somehow got to know me in somewhat way.

What I like to know is do the Crows get greedy by this, or it is best left for the Winter months when food is in short supply.

I do like to see the Crows swoop down and see them load the beaks with the scraps.

Re: Food for Crows

Don't know about greed but corvids are clever birds and unlikely to turn down an easy meal. There is plenty for them to eat all year round with insects and carrion from road kill etc. They learn quickly if you are providing food for them.

Monkey nuts - they love cracking the shells open and are rewarded with nuts.

Re: Food for Crows

The crow family are clever, how often do you see them on the motorway taking scraps off the road then jumping out of the way of cars and they eat virtually anything.

Re: Food for Crows

Yes, there the Crows do seem to be very clever at getting food. The other day, I was passing a local Supermarket Car-Park and someone had dropped a take-away roast chicken, that was half eaten. I was watching a Crow shaking the bag and had the knack of getting to the scraps inside.

Re: Food for Crows

I know this is going slightly off track, but I have experienced the intelligence of Crows in Malaysia.
Over there the house crows have learnt how to work together for food. We used to eat outside as the temperature, view, people were all fantastic. The crows would land nearby, one would hop closer to their intended meal, usually mine, and start moving around as though looking for a way in to nab my food. Now as I go to move the first crow on two others come down on the otherside and help themselves to my meal! This goes on until the meals gone or we go in.
Cheeky things, and it was amusing, afterwards.

As cunning as the crow are, i still admire the seagulls approach to gaining food from humans - DIVE BOMB!!!

Re: Food for Crows

We got 1 carion crow that trys to grab whole fat balls from the feeders so what I do now is let a bread roll go hard and push it through a nail on a wooden post that take him longer to get at when its hard and he seems to get very angry with it but it definately slows him up a bit. shei
