Without going into too much detail, one of the problems lies with the RSPCA switchboard. Better training is stopping the operators referring calls to conservation organisations but there is still a basic fault that could be cured easily. The RSPB has a list of local rehabilitators despite this being outside the society's remit and most of the contacts have been approved by the RSPCA. It seems to me that this information could be gathered and given by the RSPCA call centre for a more efficient service. I realise there may be a PR issue in referring an emergency to another organisation but that is no greater than that at the RSPB when having to explain that they are not a welfare organisation to someone who did not realise. OK, many callers are emotional about the casualty and in not knowing what to do for the best, want to pass the problem on as quick as possible but the RSPB deals with this very well and all the Wildlife team are versed to expect this kind of call so I am sure the RSPCA could do it too. It is not such a great change in policy as it first seems and does not take away from the occasions when local inspectors can still help.
