Insect Bites

Oh folks, at what point would you bother a doctor about an insect bite? I've got a finger that's really swollen after a bite on the middle knuckle yesterday, and the swelling's also some way into the hand. Is there anything I could take to calm the infection? I tried tea tree oil this morning, to no apparent effect.

Also, while I'm on the subject, can anyone recommend a damn good insect repellant? I'm ever so tasty when it comes to midges etc.

Re: Urgentish question about insect bites

If the area was red and hot to the touch it could point to an infection. If it were me my first port of call would be the pharmacist.
My Mum & brother-in-law were bit last year the pharmacist gave them some kind of cream which did the trick

Re: Urgentish question about insect bites

do you have any aloe vera plants? the gel from the leaves helps me a lot - I sometimes have a very bad reaction to bites and end up with a balloon hand after a bite on the hand or finger!! One year the swelling even starting tracking up my arm! As a last resort when I can stand the tingling, throbbing and itching no longer I take an anti-histamine and that seems to work after one or two doses.

Re: Urgentish question about insect bites

The swellings I get when bitten are quite large and often hot to the touch (even when not infected) - they certainly produce a burning itch and I tend to resort to anti-histamines, which usually do the trick. Tea tree will ease things a bit, but I see it more as a way of (hopefully) avoiding infection, because I do scratch the bites!

I have yet to find a repellent that works

Thanks, guys. I'll pop into the chemist and ask the pharmacist to take a look, and get some antihistamines while I'm at it.

Re: Urgentish question about insect bites

Must be a woman thing then. My wife reacts to any bite/sting but I don`t really get anything even with a bee sting apart from a small red mark which soon disappears.

Re: Urgentish question about insect bites

I used citronella when I went to Tanzania and I didn't get bitten. You can get it at the chemist or health food shop eg H&B

Re: Urgentish question about insect bites

Prevention
=======
Trials show that DEET is best.
But I love the smell of citronella

Treatment
========
Creams are useless - most bites get better anyway
so you give the cream the benefit. Remember pharmacists
have a profit motive in selling you something.

Antihistamine tablets taken EARLY have some small effect.
The latest wizz bang anti-histamine will be no more effective than
the older ones, though the older ones tend to be more sedating and mix
less well with alcohol.

Many, many insect bites go on swelling for up to 48 hours
and then start to settle. They can be quite red and hot, and
deciding when an infection is present can be tricky for Drs..
Red lines appearing above the bite is very suggestive of infection,
so too swelling that is going towards the trunk from a limb, rather than
symmetrical swelling around the bite.

Ice can be very soothing and will help a bit with the swelling.

Bites around the mouth and eyes often swell a lot and Drs will tend to prescribe Antibiotics earlier. If in any doubt about swelling around the
mouth or throat interfeering with breathing then go to A&E at once.

In terms of avoiding the potentially malarious mosquitoes in the tropics,
cover up arms and legs, use repellant and sleep under a net. They are most active just before dusk and for an hour or two after dusk - just when people
are enjoying a beer round the fire. Oh, and take anti-malarial properly, importantly for the length of time specified AFTER exposure.

They find you by following your exhaled carbon dioxide from a long way off.. My experience is that they will go for women before men, but I'm not sure
about the research on that.

Dengue fever comes from Day flying mosquitoes.

Re: Insect Bites

Thanks. Is it worth taking an anti-histamine before you go out? Or is that overkill?

Also, someone on the Springwatch boards was saying that a piece of duct tape over a bite straight away will help reduce the swelling - has anyone heard that before?

(By the way, I'm pleased to report my finger's almost back to normal size, though I've been left with what looks like a nasty burn between the first two knuckles. It doesn't hurt, though.)

Re: Insect Bites

the other blighter to watch out for is the harvest mite and if anyone knows of a repellent/remedy that works I'd love to know. These guys attack me big style and make it almost impossible for me to go in the garden!!

Very definitely overkill! Don't do it. Take a couple of tablets with you, but don't take them unless you really need to.

Re: Insect Bites

I don't know. I was in wetland, and there are always lots of midgey things there. But whatever it was it was bloomin' sneaky.

Does anyone know if the Craghopper Nosquito clothes are worth the money? I'd invest in a long-sleeved T shirt if they work.

Hi there

Interesting comments everyone.

I think the bites are mainly given to woman me thinks. Having said that my partner and I went to Spain in May this year and we both where eaten alive with Mozzies

The first night we where there we went in the evening and found ourselves itching all over next day. We both had bites all over our ankle bones and the itchiness was torture. 4 weeks later the bites are still showing. I had a allergic reaction to them (something I have never encountered before).

We bought a tube of stuff to prevent the itching and resorted to wearing long sleeves and long trousers in the evening and long socks too (meaning no ankle socks)

One of the little terrors bite me on my chin and I ended up with a desperate Dan chin.

I do not know if there is such a deterrant for them. People we met in Spain said they covered themselves with Jungle Formula and bought a plug in Jungle formula and they said they where alright.

Everyone is different so what may be good for one person may be not so for another person.

I have heard that cream products from Avon help too. Name escapes me at the moment.

So, I fully understand that the little horrors seen to delight in making our lives miserable

Kathy

Re: Insect Bites

There is a herbal insect repellant that I find good. It has neem in it, and can be bought in health shops. It keeps off horse flies which have the most unpleasant bites! Also neem and quassia chips solution works for nits, these little creatures being hard to get rid of as they are often immune to chemicals these days. And I have been driven hysterical by these as I have thick hair and not being able to get rid of them - and they can give you an alergic rash as well.

I haven't heard of duct tape being used for insect bites, but a nurse did recommend it to me for verrucas. Guess what? It worked.
