Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

lying in a sleeping bag in duror bothy at seven am and seeing a Pine Marten walking across the skylight ,just back from it's nightime wanders. coming face to face with another one in the kitchen tent at cub camp, both of us fancied a midnight snack. watching two eagles sussing out a small herd of Red Deer in glen coe . a wild cat sitting on a stump for about twenty minutes. disturbing an osprey having it's break fast . watching a pair of eagles from a helicopter.....what a great thread it's brought back memories of these sightings , but then again it's a case of being in the right place at the right time

Thumbs up Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

One of the most amazing wildlife views I have witnessed took palce two weeks ago in the Pyranees where I saw a Golden Eagle snatch a snake from beneath a tree, it then flew up into the tree and proceeded to devour the said snake, I would be willing to bet that not many people have witnessed that ?

Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

Really big bat in the Maldives....

Was on honeymoon a couple of years ago, and my husband and I saw what looked like a couple of pteradactils (so spelt wrong.. sorry) flying towards our atoll (island).

Later on, through the trees, we saw what looked like an upside down Fox hanging from the tree. He was soooo cool. Basically, was the size of a Fox, looked quite like a Fox, but was a bat! Really handsome creature.

Saw him, and his mate (could have been platonic.. never met the other one) flying, in sillouette, back over to the other island.

He came every evening. We fell in love with him. (and named him Oscar).

Gonna rummage around for the photo now... may even upload if I can work out how!

That sounded so amazing I couldn't wait for your own piccies and Googled "bats Maldives". They do indeed look like ptererdactyls (sp?) silhoutted against the night sky...Mind you, you cannot go wrong in the Maldives; it looks pretty amazing, per se!

Yes, I googled them after posting, and saw the pics! This thread is fab, thank you for starting it... i've been smiling all week remembering the big fruit bat! The maldives wildlife was cool... but apart from Oscar, our other faves were... wait for it... the Crows!! there was a juvenile one, with fluffy hair that used to creep back to our apartment and caw at us really quietly, wanting a bit of snickers bar!

A big grey heron used to come and sit on the side of the swimming pool each evening, he was pretty cool... but a little aloof compared to the bat and the crow lol.

Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

More an experience than an image, but without doubt filming Scottish Wildcat with Peter Cairns whilst shooting my documentary a couple of years ago, how many people have had a Wildcat walk close enough by them to brush their clothes? Cheers Peter!

For an actual image, a lot of Owen Newman shots would be in there but I think the famous snow leopard hunt on Planet Earth would probably just take it.

All of those are so amazing! mine is more of a place then a moment.
There is this place on the Isle of Man called Druidsdale, and I went their one autumn. It's a beach forest, and the leaves were such a gorgeous gold, and the sky was clear and bright, meaning the sun shone through the leaves, causing a dappled gold light to shine amongst the mushrooms that dotted the small wood.
All of these mushrooms looked strange, like they had doors a chimneys.
I can remember the air, cold and crisp, the sort that makes you feel alive and fresh.
I will never forget how that day felt. It was just... beautiful...

Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

Hello Its got to be the deer rut october last year, I was getting very close to the herd 3 stags and about 25 to 30 odd hinds I was lucky enough to get behind a thick trunked oak I had the video camera with me it was 4.30 ish just before dark I told my husband I will only be gone about an hour as the tea was nearly cooked simmering away in the oven , they came so close to the headlands I couldnt leave , the old adrenalin got pumping I forgot about time and the grub , I did go home in the end when it was too dark to film anymore, but I had about half mile to walk back to the car plus a drive home, I got home just after 6 .30 tea dryed up but no worries had to film the rut. sheila

Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

Thinking back to some years ago, one of the most amazing wildlife scenes I ever saw was the evening one of my colleagues left all the lights on and the screen doors to the halfdeck open whilst we were coasting round the Philippines. When we came back, the whole place was hopping, flying, creeping and making insect noises. It took about 3 days to sort out. One moth was so big that it overlapped a sheet of Foolscap (not A4) paper.

In the spirit of retribution, the same gentleman then caught dysentery and whilst the rest of us were ashore, he locked himself out of the accomodation and collapsed on the deck in a pool. The pool wasn't there when he collapsed.

Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

ooh... wild moose in Finland - that was amazing! I'm sure I saw lots of wonderful wildlife there... but I was young and remember little hopefully i'll get to go back one day and really keep my eyes open!

Also, hoopoe in Cork - that was pretty cool... and *thinks* I'm sure there's more... why can't i think of them?!

ooh a hare running down the road in front of us near my home in Cork...

xx

ETA - ooh... that was what I was wanting to mention - saw a pod of Orcas off the coast of west cork (mizen head) and I was sure they were, but the friends I had with me thought I was mad. I told the chap at the lighthouse anyway - who had alook, and said yes they were, and it was the first time they'd been spotted there for 25 years! I was so pleased with that one! They were really close too - presumably after the seals that live aruond the cliffs there.

Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

wow!
a humble litte entry nothing exotic, walking to school one moring about 15 years ago the road was quiet and i could hear a whumping noise i looked up and a swan flew over me so close i could reach up to touch its belly (i didn't i had vissions of it landing on me) then it lifted and flew off. amazing.
also last week i was at the main office for the company in our area and there were hares running about in the car park. they live in the bushes about the place and sit in the evening and nibble the grass. i took a pic on my phone but not a good shot it could be anything.

a friend of mine was camping with us not long ago and she said something sneezed in her tent, something small it sounded like. she decided bless you was most appropriate and thought she would investigate when it got light. we never found out what it was. no food gone no droppings or evidence left about. we eptied her tend and even took it down but found nothing.

Re: The most amazing wildlife image you've ever seen!??

I think this little beauty is exquisitely captured.

BirdGuides Picture Page

I was fortunate to see these when I was in Goa too. Best birding place I've been to so far.

Whilst on holiday in The Gambia two things stuck with me.

1. Being just out of arm's reach of roosting Gambian Fruit Bats on our hotel's first floor balcony.

2. A trip across the river into the bolongs at Tendaba Camp. The outboard motor cut out and we drifted towards the mangroves where a fairly big Rock Python was coiled up, a White-backed Night Heron crept about in the undergrowth, and an African Finfoot swam out of the bushes upstream and sat on a sandbank where it began to preen itself (very shy, my foot). Didn't know what to look at or take pictures of first. Also saw a huge Croc (10'+) and lots of Senegal Thick-knees amongst others. Wouldn't mind going back and doing further upstream to Basse to.

Cheers,

Adam
