Anywhere to report dead wildlife?

Having come across a very healthy looking but dead Fox on my walks today, I was wondering if I should or could report it?

We can report sightings of live wildlife, but how do we keep track of dead wildlife reports?

Any information would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Re: Anywhere to report dead wildlife?

If it was me I would phone the rspca, they may be interested or if not put you onto someone who is like your Wildlife Trust.

The rspca may remove the body ?

You may think it is better to contact your WT first

Re: Anywhere to report dead wildlife?

Hi

you could also report it to your local mammal recorder either via a local natural history society of wildlife trust. Even records of dead animals are of use for distrobution etc. I think I hand in more records of dead Hedgehogs to our natural history society than I do live ones.

Hi WithNature

I notice you are in Bucks. If you need any info about how and where to report a dead red kite you can find the details on the website in the signature line.

How to help: The Mammal Society
The mammal society wants your records of mammals.

Re: Anywhere to report dead wildlife?

I once saw a really strong and large male Fox. He was beutiful, but unfortunatly the only reason I saw him was he was dead at the side of the road. Someone must have moved him the day after when i went by

But being killed on the road is one of the saddest ways for an animal to die

Reminds me of a headline in the local paper "Dead man was unfit to drive"

Re: Anywhere to report dead wildlife?

If you find a dead Otter, please report it to the Environment Agency or CCW, along with details of its location so someone can come and pick it up for a post mortem. We've got a long term study going with Cardiff Uni based on records from dead Otters, which has loads of useful information on health, distribution, lifespan, diet etc.

Re: Anywhere to report dead wildlife?

Hi. Thanks for the useful posts. I contacted the local RSPCA the day you posted, but have never heard back from them. I did find out where to report local wildlife sightings though. Happill i've not seen anymore dead foxes in the area.

Re: Anywhere to report dead wildlife?

Some web sites have specific forms you can download to record animal deaths, I have printed off some Badger ones from the Lincs section of the Badgerland site as there's such a lot being found dead at the roadside in the county, you can either do it online or post the form back to the area groups address.
