Slugs

Saw my first one of the year in the garden today - whoopee doo!

Just made me thinking, why not a forum for molluscs?

I put one on my keyboard, and he/she hasn't typed a thing in ten minutes.

Very true, Their "round rolly thing" project has not produced a single Wheelbarrow yet.

Soon as you said that, my slug jumped off the keyboard and ran out of the the door, it's little foot skidding on the tiles! Temptress.

I adore Snails and Slugs, glad I'm not the only one. I find them fascinating and don't mind them in the garden as I leave it to nature to manage most of the time.

Have you seen those ones with splotches on bouncytigger? Think they're called leopard slugs. I don't know if they come out during the day, I saw one on a plant pot through the window at night

Re: Slugs

Just a quick look in general wildlife book says the Leopard slug, Limax maximus, up to 16 cm. A large and strikingly marked slug with darker stripes and blotches. The rear end of the body has a prominent keel running as far as the tail. Common and widespread, damp woodlands and gardens.
So I expect you've seen it about

Re: Slugs

I've barely seen a slug in my garden for around 3 years now, about the same time as I've had my hedgepig actually

That'll do it. Loss of key workers on the "Round rolly thing " project.

We just get black, black and little nocturnal grey things.

Can I mention snails? I spent some time in Roman Snail country, doing stuff at night (well you should fit better locks), and inevitably we trod on a very small number of Big Roman Snails. Home, as we walked through a supermarket, I trod on that rigid plastic strapping they use, lying on it's side. I shouted "Oh no, not another one, I am sorry", as it sounded just like...

You are way ahead of me. Don't tread on Roman Snails or plastic strapping.

Am I right in thinking this is the slug that eats other slugs? I hope so cos I've had a few in the greenhouse for a couple of years I think I read it somewhere in a garden mag.

The books I have don't have much info on slugs apart from identification but looking on the net here are a couple of interesting sites. The first one is a US one, leopard slugs were introduced there, there are some good photos of what they look like:
Leopard slug

This one from the BBC has a video of leopard slugs mating and how they do it, very unusual and bizarre, made me laugh. It seems they do eat other slugs

Can I borrow your Hedgehog, last year my garden was full of slugs and although I have much respect for everything even copper rings didnt keep them off my marigolds, I think they must be a delicacy for slugs as apart from a couple of lillies all they ate was my marigolds, by the end of the summer all I had left was sticks in pots with slime all over the place. GRRR!! Fi. X X X X

Re: Slugs

Hi,

Just read about a slug catcher that's supposed to work, [threw the newspaper away ] made of wool, the slugs stick to it allowing birds and Hedgehogs to eat them, will be trying out variations on it to see what works, although coffee grounds seem promising at the moment, but it needs a mound of them.

Max.
