Solitude is something that we seek when we go out into the countryside to seek rest, liberty, tranquillity. It is also something that people (old, young, whatever) have when stuck in a tower block day after day with no company or creative activity *and with no choice* ... the same thing with different results and implications ...
In the second case we're talking about 'loneliness', in the former we are creating our own loneliness - I think in some cases, people do it deliberately to enoy the feeling of sociability when they rejoin society?
But how much does any of this apply to other animals? Quote:

are herons solitary? they're alone when i see them..
a wolverine? i dont know much about these but they dont seem the social type...
