I remember as a small child being mesmerised one day by a very large amount of poo in the road, it was only later I was told it was elephant poo as the circus had arrived in town!

A full-grown black panther/leopard crossing the road not more than 25 yds in front of my car. It was sighted several times over a week by many people but no reports for at least a year.

I have two very different sightings - years apart but both within a half mile or so of one another near Stockgrove Country Park, Beds.

The first was a black squirrel. It looked smaller and trimmer than the North American Grey and had a somewhat less bushy tail. I stopped the car and watched for several minutes as it climbed down a tree, crossed over an open grass area and sat on a farm gate post. An escapee I imagine.

The second was a Stoat rolling an egg (pheasant size) across the road with its nose. When it got to the (low) curb on the other side it picked up the egg in it's mouth and lifted it onto the verge. Fortunately there were no other cars around so I was able to stop and watch it as it passed about 10 feet in front of me.

Sadly no camera at hand.

Not really a rare sighting or anything but unusual for me, a Little Egret flying over the Menai Bridge on Anglesey about 5 years ago.

Was sitting munching chips with a friend by Pevensey pond when we saw a cob swan attack a car - full on. then he continued attacking the wing mirror - walking away preening himself and then repeating the whole thing again and again!!! We went round for a closer look and he was looking in the wing mirror and then attacking it - he was very proud and full of himself - which made him look even more silly!!

I would say mine is a fish a fully formed but miniture a 3" long pike i have never seen one since and that was 40 years ago

perhaps not unusual as such but it is where I saw it, a Grey Seal that had somehow managed to get into the River Witham through the sluice gates near Boston when they are opened at high tide, and was seen up river way inland a few times in different locations before it dissapeared again

saw a dder once in a place called honey hill county durham didnt bother it it just went under a rock give me the jitters tho ,and a Red Squirrel on slayley hall golf course it was running backwards and forwards on the fairway great to see

It would have to be lots of HUGE jellyfish all over the beach where we stayed in South Wales. It was a strange sight, thew were like piles of jelly, strange...

That's reminded me of when I was birding on the Scilly Isles about ten years ago. We caught one of the small inter island boats and I became transfixed with an unusual looking plastic bag which turned out to be a Portugese man o' war.

Salmon in the River Mersey as a kid it was the most polluted water known to mankind lol.
About 18 years ago at rhosniegr anglesey we watched a pod of wales not far of shore pass by, as a 15 yearold it was the kind of thing Id seen on the bbc from farflung places.

Mines not that unusual I suppose, but I saw a Stoat in its winter ermine in the Mosedale Valley near Buttermere one Boxing Day a few years ago - I'd not seen one before and I've not seen one since.

Mine was a hummingbird hawkmoth - I had gone outside one summer's evening for a smoke and couldn't work out what was causing a humming noise, looked at the honeysuckle and saw this "thing" hovering above it. I'd heard of humming birds and doubted that's what it was, so went inside and googled what I'd seen.

That was when I found this site and learned they're not too unusual but it was unusual to me. I owe that hummingbird hawkmoth my thanks - it lead me to this website where I've happily remained ever since

Seeing a ringed neck parakeet in a wood on the outskirts of sheffield, suddenly i was transported to more exotic climbs.
Seeing a fledged Cuckoo being fed by Meadow pipits on Ardnamurchan last year. I know this happens but it dint arf look odd!

Seeing a family of 9 yes NINE Stoats running along my wall, when i was living in Scotland

again, probably not unusual to the bird watchers amongst you (which I dont really do) but on walking along a quiet stretch of river last year I saw a kingfisher fly past and then sit in a tree branch nearby, very pretty little bird!
oh, and also last year, a tiny goldcrest forraging about in clematis near the garden shed.

Many years ago I was on holiday at the Norfolk Broads and I saw a Coypu. Don't know how common they are now but it was pretty unusual for a young kid form Sheffield.

I have seen a lot of odd things; A Shark in the old Weymouth ferry quay swimming with its nose up against a grating,going nowhere,while down by the beach sharks were driving Mackerell to leap clear of the water onto the beach
A Fox apparently dancing under a gaslight but when i got closer it was leaping up to take large moths attracted bythe light
The Peacock that flew by my lounge window and landed on the pavement outside,a refugee from a local adventure park
A huge tabby cat called Tiger that would attack any man or beast laying in the sunshine outside my grans cottage door with a whole family of baby Rabbits snuggled up to her
A family of Voles playing and feeding in a shallow pit not a metre from several Adders basking in the same sunshine
A Dormouse sound asleep by my side as I shot in a competition
The Adder that basked beside me as I practiced for that competition
The dead Bat I collected from a house that as I gently examined it warmed up enough to do several graceful laps around the astonished womans lounge

They are extinct now in the UK as there was a big eradication programme!
