It makes me so mad!!!

It makes me so mad to see kids throwing stones and chasing wild life! Today in Caerphilly, near the river and castle, a child was throwing stones at the ducks and geese. Another was chasing the gooslings even though the adult geese were hissing at him and chasing him he decided to kick out at them. When asked politely to stop he just continued and then after a group of people shouted at them, their parents turned up and told everyone to 'f... off' , 'they're only ducks' and ' boys will be boys'!
If you can't reason with the adults, what hope have kids got today?
Sorry ,but it annoys me and I have to get it out of my system!

Despicable behaviour Flora but as you say if the parents don't care then why should the kids.

Personally i would have kicked the parents

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

Yes I agree. It is lack of parental influence. I had to have words with a grown man in his 40s about sending his dog into the pond on Hampstead Heath after the swans.
I even have a photo of the incedent. I cannot understand what is going on in the minds of these people and children

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

I'm afraid this is becoming typical behaviour nowadays with kids rather than isolated incidents. I put it down to lack of parental responsibility. Why some couples have children nowadays is beyond me, because many of them take no interest in what they are doing or make any effort to teach them right from wrong, although some parents, as the ones you encountered obviously have no comprehension of what is right from wrong themselves.

I was taught to respect the countryside and it's wild creatures by my parents, and would have got a sound belting if I harmed or tried to harm any creature wild or tame. Of course it's hardly possible to discipline even your own kids nowadays in case you fall foul of the law, but that's another subject.

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

I recall that Nicole had to put up with a similar incident a few weeks ago. Sadly there are children that aren't taught to care and have respect. Punishments are soft today and there are no deterrents. They are just told to run along and don't do it again. The price will be paid later when these children become adults. :-(

I just find myself repeated thinking that there's too many people, and thiis dense population results with soooo many people soooo far removed from the actual land that we live on not only from the countryside and wildlife but from where their food comes from, how it is produced.
Oh don't get me started .... it always ends up with a dad's army stylee 'we're all doomed' type comments from me and drives me another step closer to living in a log cabin in the woods of some remote part of Wales - or possibly Canada or something!!!

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

Some 50 years ago, I recall one occasion when my brother hadn't returned home from school and my Mum was becoming worried. I went off to look for him and found him in the 'possession' of a few of the local scout group. They reckoned he had been looking for birds eggs and had punished him by tying rope around his ankles and hauling him upside down, suspended from a tree. And that's how I found him. He had probably indeed been looking for birds eggs - it was a common occupation then, but their way of dealing with it was rather dangerous.

However, perhaps many more children did belong to such organisations then and had more respect for wildlife. I'm told by a local headmaster that natural history is still taught as part of the science curriculum, but sadly its not always reflected by kindly behaviour towards creatures.

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

Kids today have absolutely no respect .. I blame the parents. And here I go again, I'll be talking about the war soon and believe me, my grandmother was but a child through WWII so I have no experience to speak of!

The kids next door were throwing wads of wet toilet tissue at our bird table .. my husband said if he saw anything anywhere near the nest boxes, they would rue the day.

I hate to see kids chasing pigeons, kicking out as if they're fair game. It makes me want to run at them and give a swift kick, I can tell you.

Funny really, the place I live in is a pretty remote wood-so I don't have to move!. If you're looking for somewhere remote to move to however I suggest Antartica, or the Gobi Desert! No kids throwing stones at geese there!

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

Makes me mad too Flora, I just don't know what's wrong with people today! My granddad blames it on the TV and to some point I think I agree. I was in the lake district last month, in quite a remote area and all of a sudden there must have been a gang of yobs about 50 strong just turn up with their hoods on along with caps, all standing around hurling abuse at a couple practising tai chi in a park. Not many people seem to have any respect in this day and age, I know what I would do to the little s@ds

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

I find my self dealing with the "intelectual elite" among our young on a regular basis. a few years ago we spent 35k on some new bird hides and boardwalks, these have just been trashed again (for the seventh time), more money down the drain. I'm tempted not to bother repairing them but that aint fair on the birdwatchers.

We actually caught some of the little bar stewards in action last summer, called the police, and eventually they were released without charge... well that taught them then

and dont get me started on mini motorbikes..... argghhhhhhh

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

TV is the devil ,parents are watching soaps instead of keeping an eye on their offspring, nearly had a mini motorcycle on holiday just saw the shine on the helmet before it shot out from a side-road so now it is look right, look left, look down!
I have told groups that their help is needed to put stuff right and they are usually ashamed trouble is some bar steward told them they had rights but forgot or ommited the responsibilities part!!

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

It hurts me when I see wanton cruelty being despatched to harmless creatures, buts its good to know more think the same way.
But there is a lot of cruelty that humans go through at the hands of others, and as a society it seems we can't even stamp that out - even before thinking about tackling cruelty to wildlife.
I think fishing is barbaric, poor creatures that can't defend themselves get maimed by hooks ( often barbed ) ......in the case of course fishing get put back in the water to suffer more, or game, get to die an often horrible death........seeing this 'sport' is widely accepted as peaceful and 'in touch with nature' the cruelty issues are overlooked........Fish arn't termed as creatures that suffer!
And just think the outcry if all birdwatchers hooked their prey and injured them or killed them just to be able to say, guess what I caught today.

..........a bit contentious opinion I know.......especially as a lot of members on here ( who I respect a lot btw ) spend time fishing.....and no offence meant to anyone who does angling....I just hate seeing creatures suffer, even if they are fish.

Re: It makes me so mad!!!

Unfashionable though it may be I'd like to speak for for young people in this country. It's all too easy to hark back to a golden age when God was in his heaven and all was right with the world but ask yourselves did that really ever exist? There's always been good'uns and bad'uns there really is no difference now - out walking on the fells I meet lots of youngsters - I can't remember a bad word from any of them.
Now Daily Mail readers - there's a bunch that get me mad!

Well I'm back and in one piece ( and havent done anything to get myself arrested). Their amazingly well thought out explanation was " **** off , its drivin innit "

Mind you I do agree with Barton that not all young people are like that, on my experience badduns make up about 5% of the population, unfortunately they are the ones that get themselves noticed.
